4-2 all the time?
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:14:23 PM »
I'm coaching 8 year olds this season, and there's a league rule of having no player line up over the center at this age. Has anyone run JJ's defense using the
4-2 look all season? Thanks mucho in advance...

Most leagues with that type of rule wont let you shade ... if they do then you can try that and let me know what you think ...

What I have done in the past when confronted with this same stupid rule is to just use the 42 and 60 fronts full time ... and it just works ... the gaps still get filled with very little predictability and pretty much anything and everything an offense at that age can throw at you is covered in our base defense ...

We had that same rule no one over center or in the gap between center and guard.  I wanted to try JJ's 33 stack that last two years but went with Killer Bee because it fit the "rules" better.

What are your blitzing rules?
When I coached in a league a few years ago, we had a similar rule about having the d-line head up on the man across. In addition, the d-line could only go forward - no gap shooting - and the LBs could not blitz.

Jeesh. Was the oline allowed to pull or have blocking rules?  ::)

I have an 8 year old team that are currently running my system's on both sides of ball. They have those same type rules so to not change anything we just man over our front and defend there strength while still staying gap sound.

At that age level, yes, the rules allowed the oline to pull. The guy I coached under at that time pulled all the time (DW) and the only reason we could is because the league probably didn't think it was possible for 3rd graders to learn it.

Why youth coaches think 3rd graders can learn the stuff they do in school or master the intensely complex stuff in video games but can't grasp the simple task of pulling or an easy rule like G.O.D is beyond me. Well, actually I know why that is but it has nothing to do with the kids.
