DE play
« on: October 01, 2017, 08:41:22 PM »
Has anybody ever had their DE's start back a few yards
And at ball snap come forward aggressive and fast and play the same technique? Kinda like JJs 33 stack Dogs?

Having a issue with them understanding force play. They are coming but so worried about outside containment not closing the C gap with force play.

I haven't ran JJs 33 but think his Dogs style may fit my DE's better. And just wondering if anybody tried that style with this D?

We use them that way, depends on the formation...similar to JJ's I let them get a feel on where to line up.
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

I personally would never back them off the LOS.  Doing so changes the Dynamics of the Defense and the alters the geometry.  I'm not sure how backing them off and coming hard is better.  Here's why.....Now they "Have to time the Snap" so any momentum gained by coming hard is lost if they go on 2 or run No Go.  Not to mention the Encroachment penalties for failing to time it up.

The DE set up is fluid and based on the Offensive alignment.

1) Never align yourself to a block
2) Never "Chase" the formation. Adjust inside or outside (see 1) (Exception: Trips from a team who has proven they can throw)
3) The "Force" MUST happen inside the OT position.  Speed is more important than strength or size, in my opinion.
4) Impact every play (Cause Chaos!)
Not MPP... ONE TASK!  Teach them!  :)

That's the thing their more worried about getting beat outside then playing force and its leaving a big hike in C gap sometimes. I've reaped every week in practice and then come game time no force more up field...

I do get the dynamics of the DE just trying to see if this will help them. Playing #1 team out of 45 teams today. They are off tackle team until they break one. Not well coached but their Jimmies or better than my Joe's. Going to confuse their line with different stack calls and hopefully put their horses in a corner most the game.

I have moved DE's off the LOS at times.  Especially if it helped with their angle of attack or to slow a really fast DE down to the play.  I had a DE that was really fast one season and would often overrun plays (deep sweeps/pitches) so backing him up off the line worked for us.  We placed his depth behind the heels of the DT and that helped.

I would not be adverse to playing with things to make "it" work for your team.

I did it this weekend and it helped them a lot. Have to brag on the 63 a Lil played the #1 team in our grade/ league (45 teams). Team shuts the scoreboard off every week almost. Their Jimmie are def better than our Joe's all around. We shut em out 1st half. But 3rd had 2 kids do what they wanted and not assignment boomed they scored, then on a spread Play, had everybody covered and QB (best back in our grade) took off and got to our 10...short field... They score... And 1 other play 2 kids didn't do their job scored... All in 3rd qtr. Regrouped and shut em down 4th qtr. Man just about doing your job! I promise you we have played teams that our just better than us that put up 30+ a game and haven't put over 2 tds on us except this team. Our O struggled so lost to those top teams by a Td. But point is... The D can adjust to anything and if game planned right you can compete with teams with better athletes all day! Do have to have an O to score tho!!
