Gregory 6-3 vs Trips
« on: June 16, 2016, 11:40:51 AM »
Planning to switch from WT6 to Gregory 6-3 this season with 9/10s. Just got off phone w/ buddy who is DC at HS level and he proceeded to tell me how he would eat up a 4-4 cover 3 using trips. I told him I would take my chances getting beat by passes to run this D, but that did get me thinking so could you take your Gs out of the stack and put them out on the two slots on trips side in man-to-man? I'm planning to use smaller quick kids for Gs and big gap pluggers at T, so moving those kids out to cover receivers probably shouldn't result in any obvious mismatch and w/o having to sub. So I'm essentially switching to a 4-2-5, still have gap integrity, still have Mike for Cover 3 (well technically Cover 1 now I guess) and force, and still have my headhunting ends. So it would look something like:

C
                                                             M
                                          B                               B                                             G                               G                             C
                             E           T                                T                E
O                                O     O             C                O         O                                 O                               O                              O

                                                       O  O

I believe I've seen trips discussed on here and the recommendation was to stay in zone and pull ILB over to help cover trips in a 3-on-2 situation. Just throwing this out there. Btw, I haven't bought Coach Gregory's manual yet but I plan to soon.

I would take a look at Coach Gregory's Spread call that will put the CB between receiver #1 and #2, DE will split the difference between T and receiver #3, OLB will split the difference between receiver #2 and DE.

                                                     CB
                              OLB

             DE
T                                      #2
                       #3                               #1

                                                     CB
                              OLB

             DE
T                                      #2
                       #3                               #1

This is exactly what we do.  We just use the SPREAD call.  We coach up our CB's that they have the deep part of the zone and the OLB's have the flat.  Our DE's still crash in and take their normal path to the QB (outside hip of outside back), which will usually disrupt the slants.

We also have the Mike shading a bit to the trips side.

There are some other adjustments that you might want to look at when the kids get older, but if a 9/10 QB can beat this zone, then hats off to them.

Against a 2x2 set it would look something like this correct?

C                                                                           C
                                         M
       B               E      T  G     G T    E             B
O                              O O O O O                            O
            O                         O                     O
                                       O

O                              O O O O O                            O
            O                         O                     O
                                       O
      C                                                             C
                                        M
                                B             B
                    E          T  G     G T      E
O                              O O O O O                            O
            O                         O                     O
                                       O

C splits the difference between #1 and #2 receiver.  E splits difference between Tackle and #2 Receiver.  I would not call Spread in this instance and just stay in base.  Also with no TEs your Gs and Ts could go Auto Gap with Gs getting in the A gap and Ts in the B gap.   I hope this helps.

With twins we went Red Slide which slides the ILB between T and #2 WR. No read step though, We just Read it from start position...still played run first.
