surreal events in the closing minutes...we have a wide open te in the endzone...we overthrow the ball by inches....

we run a reverse at the 2 yard line and run outside of the kickout...we also miss a kickout on power...back up wing goes in and fumbles at the goal line...

just unreal.

ultimately , we once again found a way to lose. nobody in this state would have given us a chance in this game...we shoulda, coulda won...one of those.

they absolutely blew east out in the last few years...

Changing the culture to win those games is the real struggle. I have seen this everywhere, once you accomplish that then the wins in the tight ones will come. You are making strides in this direction, keep it going & soon they won't know how to lose.

WE fumbled 3 times in the games first 39 plays...sub wing fumbled both of his two carries in the game...9 fumbles...it was by far the best defensive effort we have had since I have been here...I mean we really bothered them with our game plan, they got one td pass immediately after a fumble... then their second td came after our spur gave up contain on a qb scramble...then a push off in the endzone wasn't called...but hey, its football..thats gonna happen.

now, some of our fumbles were just bobbled pitches, kids excited, not knowing how to play in these tense situations...the other fumbles were a credit to a tough defensive unit , one of the best in our class, flying around and getting their hats on the ball. im not complaining about this, but it does seem like the best defensive teams use their hats into bodies and into the ball a lot. our center was beat up by the nose who came out driving his helmet into him, the c gappers were launching themselves into the tes hat first...it was physical out there. I had to find ways to move my traps and counters and powers around to try and exploit that explosive line...many times we had run lanes and either fumbled on contact or their superior speed kept us to modest gains.  you can see by our rush totals (around half our average) that these guys played tough defense against us.  44, 53 btw, nothing fancy. just tough kids beating on us.  when you look at my line up on the field...9 out of 11 kids out there were weight room kids, the two tes were not and they had the beasts hammering them ...they struggled to prevent penetration in the c gaps. I had to shorten my counters from 25 and 34 counter to 23 and 32....that helped some.

Getting a hat on the ball is an old coaching adage. It seems good tough physical teams still do it. This is where getting them all to buy in to the 6am's will help.

Fumbling or mishandling the pitch, is another issue. Could be they were tight, or just could be a focus issue. The other thing is sometimes good backs will fumble struggling for the extra yard. We had 1 fumble Friday night, it was on our Truck(wing T blocking scheme), the back made a great run then got sandwiched & a man got his hat on the ball. Thankfully our ball security has been pretty good. I think what will happen for you is the longer you are there, the better it will become. Remember your offense requires a lot of ball handling skills. This always takes time to develop, in the spring we looked like the 3 stooges handling the ball. It's quite different now. I am thankful we have spring ball.

Here they have had a run of great TE's, the last 3 all going D1. This season the cupboard is bare, but there is hope as there is a  soph & frosh who will have the size & agility to be decent next year. In big games we are almost always open for this reason. It's a funny thing we can see just how much progress we have made when the frosh have come up. A few are big bodies, & good toughness, but just so far behind what we do. Our QG was standing next to me when we had the young guys in, he commented wow coach they look like we did in the spring.

The hudl film finally loaded and I watched our reverse play on fourth down...

the edge was there, the corner got logged and the runner went outside...he had one man to beat, cut back inside him (wisely, since the guys speed was obvious) but heres the problem....my pulling guard, tackle and fullback , all who were to seal inside...were standing there WATCHING THE PLAY while the pursuit from inside out ran down the runner. Yup,. unreal. that is the difference in the game ultimately.

also, I see now that a kid who told me "I got held" simply attacked the wrong gap giving up contain...and the qb ran outside untouched for a long first down , then they hit a td pass next play - that was a fourth down scramble.

We focus on being relentless on offense. If anyone isn't on someone at the whistle or running to someone every offensive player has to do up/downs. In film we crucify them if this happens in the game. Everyone misses blocks, but then find an ugly to hit. We really stress this, if anyone wants to watch they do it from the sidelines as you won't be playing.

Thanks Joe, we also let me see where they are watching the game, we will need to have everyone do updowns rather than just the loafer, I think itll drive home the point. We have a couple of chronic loaf types that always want to hit and quit to watch the game.

Here's another thing to watch. Our OL can never look behind them We look forward only till the whistle. This keeps them going forward.

well, the good news is the tremendous improvement on defense this season. That's a plus.

The funny thing is I am better known as an offensive coach, but I made my bones as a defensive coordinator. I still believe Defense & Kicking win championships. My HS coach would preach " If we score we may win, if they don't score we can't lose". I still tell my teams the same.

after 9 games last year...we were giving up a whopping 39 ppg, we are down to 26 ppg this year...but can do better...some of those points include special teams and post subbing scores....but still...theres a sure sign of improvement...
