First week
« on: July 15, 2016, 12:13:14 AM »
Our objective the first week was alignment, stance, introduction of core drills, tackling and turnovers. We broke up into three groups DL, LB, CBs. Each day we did a tackling circuit. We did a strip drill and Who's Ball. We introduced all the LBs and DBs to man technique and began getting reps. The DBs have gotten a good deal of reps. We need more with our LBs. I'm getting a little bit of a feel for how to construct practice with the defense.

One thing we've done is drawn up formation cards. On the index card the eligible recs are numbered 1-5 from right to left. 1 is always the widest right player and 5 is always the widest left player. There is no QB on the card. The center is a square with two O on each side for the G and Ts. We put our first defense out there and created groups of 5. Dummies were on the ground for the OL. We would give each group a card. One after another they would sprint and line up and the defense had to align quickly. Once we did this a couple of nights we added motion just by calling out a players number. We would get about 3-4 reps per minute. We would then get a new defense. We could rep our 8th and 7th grade group plus back ups. The groups waiting to do a formation watch the defense for mistakes because we are tracking it. Lots of formation alignment and stance work.

We've also spint a good deal of time working run fits. So week one is done. We have 4 practices next week with two bring camp days. On those days we will split the team so DBs and LBs come one day from 8 am to 9 pm. The whole team practices from 6-9. The next day Spurs and TNTs come in at 8 with everyone else showing up at 6. We get to use shoulder pads next week with limited contact.

Do you mind sharing what Core Drills you are using for each group?
