JV unbeaten, giving up 4ppg
« on: October 08, 2013, 07:06:47 AM »
last night, the JV took the opening drive right down the field ....quick 8-0 lead.

Second play on defense, shark backer reads bubble screen and its a pick six for the good guys.

Held a very fast team to just 6 points.

Giving up 4ppg thus far.  playing 46 Guts and Victory call. No varsity starters play on the JV at this point.  We use only freshman for special teams.

Sophs that have been starting on varsity have not been playing JV.

Thanks Joe- its a generally good feeling with varsity, jv and frosh a combined 7-3, varsity having two losses to two state power houses and really , showing pretty well going back to last seasons season finale.

We arent satisfied, but for today, we are going to practice as a team, watch the game film where we underachieved and why/how we nearly lost that game. Its a real "teachable moment" for the whole program, coaches included.

We are also underscoring our commitment to great fundamentals and conditioning with todays practice plan.

Something that really annoyed me, I got three notes yesterday on why kids couldnt practice (injuries) and when I asked the kids after the game saturday if anyone was injured not one kid reported anything to me> between them seeing the trainor or getting parents to schedule docs appointments WITHOUT TELL ME< IM UNHAPPY

We have a rule, before any player for any reason can see a trainer they must see a coach first. Next, all notes must go through the trainers. Now it's very different at the 8A school because we have 4 trainers on staff. They are permantent to our school & have been for years. They are very unlikely to allow any non sense.

At the 2A school we had temp trainers who were brought in. It was luck of the draw, most were young. One got fired for txting girls. You just never knew what was going to happen next.

So, you are right on insissting they see you first. You will just have to address this again.

WE have the same rule. Enforcing it, holding them accountable, thats the challenge.

Here it's easy because we have a relationship with our trainers. When a player walks in the first question is did you speak to your coaches. Again I understand how different it can be at other places, & that we are lucky. I have also seen where the training staff can be at odds with the coaching staff.

Accountability is always an issue with everything we do. All you can do is be consisstant & hold a player out of a game if that's what it takes. Sometimes you only have to do things like that once. I know it's easy to sit here & say it, while it's more difficult to do.

The other thing becomes players will often say I was fine after the game & woke up the next day & was hurt. Communication today is so easy, text a coach, call a coach, facebook, twitter, & email. While I am extremely careful about electronic communication with my players, we do use txt.

I would say it goes back to changing the culture, the guys that were here before me at times think "hey, we always did this before"...so getting them on board with the new rules takes some time and yes, some updowns/time on bench, being in the doghouse and so on.
