Tips on stopping sweep....
« on: September 23, 2013, 09:14:11 PM »
Coach C,

The 46 Gambler as of late has been GREAT from C-gap to c-gap and we are getting penetration on QB's very quick from our extremely fast spurs.... However we have ONLY been scored on by teams that sweep.... I think it has gotten around that we cannot stop sweep as a team from sharing film and coach to coach conversations.... I tend to disagree bc the teams that have swept on us have had EXTREMELY fast RB's and a good plan to leadblock for them....

Mostly it's been teams running double tight formations with a Wing that have been getting us.... This past week they had a kid that was so fast that he would spill into the backfield around the DE who was outside arm free perfectly and could still turn the corner..... Is there any way I could position my corners or LB's to give our opponents less chance of breaking a run around the corner????

We stopped a 4th and 10 sweep attempt the last game to win the game by bringing my Fred off the corner on field side, and slightly expanding my LB's to field side so they could release and fill the alley quickly and catch the runner..... I'd just like to toy with alignment to make it tougher to run outside on us.. NOBODY has been successful with an up the middle run or even offtackle.... So we are essentially defending sweep, pass, counter from most teams... thoughts???

Maybe Nick Right/Left on Field side?????? I have an extremely fast NICK (used to be a linebacker)....... Maybe send him to field side when i'm anticipating a sweep?????

sounds like a variety of issues:

depth, width, angle of spurs
reaction by lbers to flow
reaction by falcon to flow- where is he?
