Direct Snap with a Pass Only QB
« on: May 07, 2011, 09:33:39 PM »
DumCoach and others,

Thought about using DC's Football Schools to make my mandated cuts and place players in position. If I get a kid (or kids) that can only throw, how can I utilize them without going to an under-center offense?

One thing about coordination - those who throw can also catch.

Clarks right with 90% or more chance, I hand coordination also carries over to kicking, the same kids that punt, kick off well can 'usually' throw / catch well, not with 100% but many/most can.

If he really can only throw (and assuming you have the receivers to make it worthwhile), you put him in position to take a shotgun snap and array the rest of your regular offense (minus one player to account for him) around that.

I don't think I'd want to put a QB that can only throw in shotgun.  I've never seen a QB in shotgun that couldn't run except one and he was NFL (and NFL coaches are often dum' enough to do that.).

If I had a QB that can only pass, he's going under center as a "handoff machine".  Then I make sure he rolls out after handing off on 23/24 so that the defense sees him executing "Pass Left/Pass Right".  If he's that good, they're watching him.

I'd also teach the offense to run DC Run &Shoot Passing.  In three days it's in and you can fill the air with footballs.

I had the same issue a couple of years back.  What we did was moved up around on run plays.  On 16 power,18 sweep he was the 2 back.  I did allow him to run 22 wedge so they saw him run the ball.  He also lined up as the 1 back on the pass plays.  We put in the Dave Cisar's Jet series early and ran the pass plays in that series.  We also added another run play for him since he never ran the ball it was very effective.  We would fake the hand off on jet rocket 28 sweep and then run it to the 7 hole.  The cb and de would run right past him every time.
