I always liked, "Darwin, what's your theory?"

Best line of the series.

I don't doubt it, and there may have been better bands but the Evolution Revolution was the definitive band of 1960s hard rock.

I was leaning towards The Velvet Underground. How we digress....

Rob, I'm taking into account not only their "sound" and success, but also their influence on other bands (The Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, REO Speedwagon, etc.)

I think their ability as a live band is what puts them over the top.

Michael, that's a great example.  They were performers at heart and part of any band's success is the experience you provide to others when you perform.  That's what makes them exciting.  In addition, the song they performed here heavily influenced The Guess Who's classic, "No Time."

Like a lot of TV bands (The Monkees, The Archies, Josie and the Pussycats), there's always a credibility issue that keeps some bands from getting their due.  Yeah, The Monkees really just sang, but then so did Dionne Warwick and Englebert Humperdink.  In the case of the Evolution Revolution, their drummer ("Bananas Marmaset") ranked with any of the great drummers of his era (Ginger Baker, John Densmore or Charlie Watts), but because the Evo Revo were on TV, he gets overlooked.

He's never on any of the lists of great drummers, which is ridiculous.

Is there any band, ever, that he wouldn't make better in concert?

Yes.  I can think of two.

And that's fine, John.  I'm sure you (and others) can.  But your criteria for what constitutes a great musician can be entirely different from mine, although we can both recognize what greatness is.  For me, what made Bananas Marmaset so great, was the same thing that made Ringo Starr so great.  Their style was not just unique, it was unusual.  Starr was a left-handed drummer who played a right-handed drum kit.  Marmaset had no formal training and could also play with his feet.

Oh, I get what you're saying, just having fun with it.

Just thinking nobody makes Rush a better live act than Neal Peart.  Like them or not, he is essential to their sound.

And I'm a huge Van Halen fan, nobody but nobody can improve on Alex...   :)

Another thing to consider is when groups write and perform their own material, as opposed to just singing someone else's music, it can make the experience more personal (for the performer and the audience) because you know the singer actually experienced the song as written.  For instance, in their titular work, "Evolution Revolution" Lance writes and sings "Come on Baby, hang your hands down low.  Come on Baby, sway them to and fro," you know he's experienced this.  And he's writing from that experience.

Oh man, I get sick of people talking about Pert, Bonham, Bananas Marmaset, Baker etc... For my money Stanton Moore is the best drummer around. Certainly better than any classic rock drummer. And I get to see him play Sunday.
