Please note, I was very careful not to use absolute terms around their ability or saying someone is the best. I am only addressing Michael's comment, in that nobody could make those two bands better in concert.  That's it.  And that goes to everything DP just mentioned.  When a guy is involved in writing/creating a song/sound, and has a lot of talent, it gets hard to make that "better" per se.  Especially not when you have a band that has a unique sound, which Rush and Van Halen (and a lot of other bands) certainly do.

I'm sure the list is long of better drummers than Alex or Neal.  But they aren't going to make those bands better.

And hey - you asked.   :P

I was just stirring the pot. I am a big Allman Brothers fan. Very misunderstood band. They were not a southern rock band but a pschodelic blues band who happened to have a few hits that leaned to country blues (Southbound and Ramblin Man in particular). Anyway, the best lineup they ever had at guitar was not Dicky Betts and Duane Allman. It was Derek Trucks (drummer Butch Trucks' nephew) and Warren Haynes. Not even close in my mind. I think for the most part you are correct. But there are exceptions. Many of Clapton's hits are actually covers. "Cocaine" comes to mind but his version is much better in my mind then JJ Cale's who has a unique sound. Eddie Veder singing Comfortably Numb with Roger Waters is great(he sings the Pink lines). Pink Floyd is a band with an unusual sound but I have some live covers of bands performing versions of their songs that I think surpass the original. Widespread Panic is a fantastic band that does some great covers. I have a No Sugar Tonight by them that is amazing along with Going Out West (a Tom Waits tune) and Wish You Were Here. Oh, and them doing Sympathy For the Devil is one of the best covers I have ever heard.

They are a southern rock band, just like Lynard Skynard, Marshall Tucker and Molly Hatchett.  All the same thing; all interchangeable.

The Evolution Revolution was one of a kind.  When you saw them, you knew who they were.  The were singular icons in style.  While their music influenced others, no one could ever duplicate who they were on stage.

GF is dragging me to see The Eagles this spring.  Ugh.  Just a knock-off of Linda Ronstadt/Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Just thinking nobody makes Rush a better live act than Neal Peart.

To be fair, we never saw what Bananas could do with 235 drums.

Really, they aren't. Listen to the other 99% of their songs, the  stuff that didn't get radio play, and you realize they were a blues band. Heavily influences by Elmore James, Elvin Bishop, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters to name a few. Then they threw in extended instrumemtal jamming similar to the Grateful Dead. The southern influence came from Betts who wrote some off, but not nearly even half of their music.

Is it the reincarnation Tour?

It is, Joe.  But when I went to see The Four Tops, there was just one original Top.  When I went to see The Temptations, only one ("Otis!") of the five was an original Temp.  When I went to see The Dramatics, none of them were originals.  Saw the O'Jays, two of the three were originals.  I did see Gladys Knight and she was the original Glady Knight.  But whether it's the original Eagles, or all replacements, it's not going to matter, I'm still getting dragged to it.  She made me go see Garth Brooks, too.  The longest 3 1/2 hours of my life...

I read a great book on a Rolling Stones tribute band, and the lead singer pointed out that at this point, the Rolling Stones are basically a Rolling Stones tribute band.

You could drag me to see the Eagles and Garth Brooks. If I was a corpse. Otherwise it ain't happening.
