Great first scrimmage
« on: August 24, 2013, 07:47:46 PM »
Today we had a 3 team scrimmage. I thought we did great.

We played Guts 46 the whole time,  shut everyone out, gave up one or two first downs at most and created turnovers all over the place. The kids played great until they got tired, but evne then they stopped the other guys.

Offensively, we were smashing and grinding for 4-8 yards most plays, no negative plays, got blow up once on a trap when they had a double A gap blitz...other wise, trap tore up the other teams, my 5 foot 6 fullback rushed for about 150 yards during the morning. he broke a run about 65 for td before anyone even knew he had the ball. I heard one of the linebackers screaming at his teammates "open your eyes!!!" lol.

reverse went good, counter xx, power, counter....trap, wedge...all good.  on a down note, we still have fumblities, we coughed it up twice on the day.

Great start though for our 20 varsity kids. I told the other kids "youre just not ready yet" and I meant it. we brought about 50 kids but many of them are new frosh or sophs or newbies that dont know anything about the game.

we ran about 7 different plays.

Congrats Coach!  I'm sure the fumbles will disapear.

well, we started the day with 7 varsity linemen and finished with 6. ONe left mid scrimmage to get stitches.  we were missing our starting center with hydration/overheating issues.
our backup wings played well, the incumbant fullback from last year, well he played sparingly and coughed it up, he just doesnt look as explosive as the other guys whos giving up about 60 lbs....

Right on.  Sounds like you have some pieces to work w/.  7 varsity lineman is definitely a good start!

we scored on a very long trap (maybe 65 yards), a very long counter xx, (also about 75 yards), a long counter (25 yards) and a long power where the back made the money cut (25 yards).

I didnt see any other scores on film.  Nobody scored on us.  WE had zero plays that went backwards. (two false starts however, two fumbles).

Steve

Good work, all the 6 am's are worth it when you get results. You still have 2 weeks till the first game so I'm sure you will put the polish on.

What did your opponnents run against you? Sounds lik ethe D played awesome.

WE saw pistol  zone stuff

we saw I wing/wing t based stuff

did not have to defend option.  Worst plays of the day by our defense, spur got sucked inside, let a reverse outside, and a crack sweep where our replacing corner was blocked in the back.

otherwise, the kids did some good things. we are however out to fix quite a few things with the dline play.  they were free lancing and not doing proper 3 tech play.
