What is a "Smashmouth clinic weekend?"
« on: December 09, 2014, 05:30:12 AM »
This years clinic....(after a two year break) should be the absolute best clinic I have ever hosted.

1) The Saturday clinic is a gathering of coaches who run double wing or want to defend double wing and learn more about our double wing system and philosophies. The Sunday clinic is all 46 defense.... We will gather at East Catholic so Ill be in my home turf, we will have access to our weight room, team room, gym space, bags and shields, cones and footballs.

2) our games from the last two years are on hudl and we will project games/cutups/highlights on a huge white board for film analysis. We will have an opportunity to discuss blocking/play schematics and execution with slow motion and all of those good things that make it simple and effective...we will take a hard look at the defense, good bad and ugly, mistakes....successes.Our defense was tops in our class in sacks and top five in interceptions.

3) We will white board /chalk talk the system and discuss how and why we block things the way we do. we will discuss the defense and run fits and coverage and so on.

4( we will discuss the tags and tweaks and adjustments we have made to the systems since 2000.

5) I hope to get a couple of guest speakers to share their stories and show their film as well.

6) nine am to four pm with an hour for lunch...often we go later than four pm....but I suppose we need a stop time.

7) drills and demos....discussion and question/answer periods.   Of course drawing plays on napkins tends to be part of any good clinic.

8) nobody will get hurt, but you might get sore from doing some drills if we get into that.

9) its not about whats right or wrong, its about what we do and why we do it and how we do it..."this is what we do" and "maybe we should try this" as well.

10) its football, all weekend.

Sounds awesome but I guess I will have to wait until you are 80 and retire down to Florida to make one of your clinics, lol.

A few things I would like to see at the clinic. Not sure how far my suggestions will go but here they are anyway.  Particularly on defense.  Defending certain offenses:  like the flexbone, wing t, cetain spects of the spread like power and zone read...

The one offense I really would be interested in would be the flexbone.  A great clinic talk would be defending the flexbone with the 46 gambler.

Also, maybe some stuff on practice organization on the defensive side of the ball.  Key drills fr each position.

tackling circuits

offensively I wouldnt mind seeing something on line calls on when to use them and how you would use them.  (line calls other than dynamite, domino)

single wing spread stuff:  two formations: blocking power, counter, sweep,   passing?

Steve,

Is there a hotel you recommend?  If several groups stay at the same hotel, I see conversations continuing well past the official 4pm end on Saturday.

Thanks,
Brian

If I had any way to get a flight there from OKC for $100 I'd be there....

Being that won't happen, I'll probably end up at the Tulsa Glazier Clinic that weekend for the 2nd year in a row.  Hoping this time they have a few legit youth topics.

Manchester CT

Feb 21st, Feb 22nd

I believe the Hampton Inn is all of maybe 5 minutes away from the school.

I have stayed at one of the hotels in East Hartford, it was nice. I cant recall if it was a Comfort Inn or what.

The clinic was awesome.  Two days of pretty intense learning, demonstrations, discussions, fun, philosophy.  The double wing stuff was outstanding especially for anyone there looking to implement the system.  That was day 1.  Even for some of us who have implemented the system already it was really good to get a refresher on qb footwork and backfield steps.  The day ended with coach c talking about some passing combinations from the dtdw.

Day 2 was pretty intense...it was 46 time!!!  Coach calande got into alignment, assignments, blitzes, film, defending: empty, full house, wing t, flexbone triple--it got real intense when coach c and the group starting talking run fits verses iso, power, counter trey,--we really got into some particular details.
Then we ended the day with some more film and  some press man technique!!!!
