Coach good stuff,COUGAR?any ways really like them.I know you are super busy but what technique do you advise for youth pass rush? I know you like punch rip for run base , do you use the pull/push also? And which drills do you think would benefit us most ?

Actually, you should use techniques that you are familiar with, which is OK. However, I feel that the Push/Pull concept is used primarily in a shaded or head up defense. My DL are always attacking LF or RT so it makes sense for us to use the rip technique vs run and club/rip vs pass. Each technique flows into the next. The main reason we do this is because we want to open up lanes so our LB's can stunt. We feel that push/pull will only clog the lanes up. I don't think the Push/Pull tech is good at the HS level [JMO]. And our LB's use the same techniques as our DL when they stunt, so everything is intertwined. We also feel we have a greater chance of success by attacking one side of a O/Lineman.  1/2 of his power vs all of our power. We add the spin technique so if we get forced too wide, we can get back into our lane. To us it is all about using simple yet solid techniques vs the run and pass to create lanes so we can stunt and we stunt 2 LB's on every play for the most part. Even young kids can be taught the club technique. Actually, I feel that the majority of the drills I posted can be taught at the youth level. If you think about it, we are fairly simple: Rip/Squeeze and Punch across vs the run, Club/Rip and Club/Rip/Spin vs the pass. That's for both the DL and the LB's [when stunting]. We don't teach a lot but we will be very good at what we are taught.

I agree. Your DC should be asking questions. But then again, you are becoming a well rounded coach knowing both sides of the ball. And, believe me, if you are a OC and understand how defenses work, it makes it easier for you to attack defenses. So doing the legwork is actually a good thing.

DL Coach! That's good stuff. Those three guys are the cornerstone of the defense. Just be sure to incorporate some group time with the #1' & #2's so they can mesh together.

Rick, The D should always run better than the O. And that is coming from an OC. We have adopted the philosphy of best 11 on Defense.

CD,Sorry i am late on this but we adopted our 1/11th,that is each position(player)does his job(1position ) and there is 11 positions it will get done.We just keep repeating you must do your 1/11th.

Great concept and similar to what we use with our offense.
