5225 STACK DOWNLOAD

Very aggressive yet very effective. Part of the 521 Stack Defense. What you don't got names for them LB's? Why?

Got this the other day from the other thread and finally went through it. I think it looks pretty good, I ran Jack's 63 last year and had MPP's at the D guard position that would not fire off the ball and we would get hammered by QB sneaks, so I used some calls to try and stop it but eventually went to a 30 front left the middle backer home and let the outside backers play taps. It seemed that the kids were more aggressive also(not sure why though). The thing I struggle with is man versus zone. What is your take? Should this be a man based defense because of the pressure?

I think you can play a cover 3 off it and I mention that in the PB. I've played Cover 3 behind it at the HS level as well, usually against Trips, Slot and Pro sets with two wide outs. Regardless, I feel it is always better to Cover 3 a Trips set in the open field.

Isn't it cover 0 when the FS has coverage responsibility?

You are right, but we don't play a 1 Free in the 5225. Everyone has a man in our cover 1, it makes it real simple. Cover 1 = everyone cover 1 man.

Thanks for sharing that. We are basing from cover 3 but also will run cover 0 this year when we feel the need in a 5 or 6 man rushing situation.

Heres an incomplete powerpoint I have started...see if it works...

Coach, I was hoping to see something like this from you.  The reason: our program was 46/bear forever, then we switched to a 40 front (played too much coverage with it and got gashed in the run game) and now, for the past two years have gone back to bear...but it is more of a 3-4/bear hybrid.

It's always interesting to see how defenses evolve.  Thank you for sharing coach!

Wazzup Coach? I see you are busy with the FIST. The key idea behind the 5225 was to use only a few rules and keep it very aggressive at the same time.  Our kids had problems with all the different individual calls in most most 3-3 Stacks, ram, blast, dog, rocket, wacko, smash, etc. That's why we run a simple # scheme with our LB's. And we never have our LB's cover a TE, which means the FS is usually involved in any type of man coverage. The 5225 is a package from the 521 Defense.

Yeah, what I think is most important is to make the "calls" logical and easily tied to the SIGNALS...ie "heels" I touch my heel after making an S or W for sam or will...when its BOTH SAM AND WILL, then I ll do a SAW action...etc.

In any case, I must have about 1000 pages of hand drawn notes but want to make a powerpoint and have it ready to go...but alas, my computer laptop has died and now im relegated to a short time on a desk top shared with family lol.

In any case,  the number system works, I used it for TOM SIMONTONS 44 STACK and we just numbered each linebacker, 1-4 and called stunts like that too...with a couple of special tags to change alignment and only cover three (undefeated jr high school team just before swapping to 46 gambler).

I find that we can start simple, add a couple of stunts or coverage slowly and do many things...but what matters most? being aggressive and WANTING TO make plays.

Every day I wake up and want to go back to the Gambler but remember that I dont have a will backer or free safety that can run....I just found out yesterday that one of my Freds (neck injury) who didnt play last year will return this year and hes an athlete, just very raw.  Kids in great shape and almost surely will be our fred this year...

Every time I get another success story about the 46 Gambler package I think * I need to stay with it*...but I know that we dont have the personnel right now.

I think you can incorporate some Gambler into your 3-3 Stack. I ran Buddy Ryan's Bear for a year on the HS Level and had great success until I played a good Spread team and I still incorporate some bear into my 3-3 stack. Matter of fact, I ran the hell out of Bear [TNT] against spread teams my last year. Spread teams had problems with the bear front and a #1 stunt or delayed stunts with the #3's off the edge.

no doubt. I have something I call SWAT which is the sam/will attacking the te.

so it looks like the 46 on the strong side and stack on the weak side...like this:

-------------------------------------------------O
----O---------O--O--X--O--O--O
---------------T-------N---T-----S-----R
---------L--------------------------------------C
---------------W------M
--C-

-----------------------------F

NO CHANGE IN COVERAGE, COVER 3 OR COVER 1

T

Really well done. I like the mixture without bringing Mike every down.  You should attach this playbook in the 33 Downlad Section so it does not get lost here.

Great playbook !
