Some of you guys may know me and some of you guys may not. 5225 Maddog has been around for years and won me and many others a lot of games. Many Spring Texas State Championships and a ton of games.

I want to make this group Active again and who is interested in the MADDOG 5225 (3-5-3) and BROTHER BIG KATT (4-2-5). Very Simple and Pressure Defense! I would love to explain this championship defense.

Coach, welcome back . . . it will be enlightening for all of us to discuss football directly with you as well as see your thoughts on a variety of topics. For some of us who are not completely aware of your Maddog 5225 defense, could you give us a brief overview? Thanks.
We are all in this together.

Coach,

Can I see your 4-2-5 stuff?  In the league I'm coaching in I can't have a nose guard.  Thanks!

Out of pure curiosity, why are so many interested in the 4-2-5?  Because of TCU?  Are you all being Spread out and seeing pass that much?  The reason I ask is that suddenly a Pass Defending Defense (Also know as the Nickle Package) is suddenly en vogue at the Youth Level and I simply wonder wonder why?

I spent a couple of years learning how to Morph the Split 4-4 into the 4-2-5 and yet for every down I did so, the 4-4 could have covered it.  But, the 4-2-5 was not Stellar at the youth level against those who Spread to run!

Just my experience.   8)

It' funny you say that this week's challenge is another spread 2x 2 team 3RD 1 in a row. I truly don't get these guy's none of them run it write and our multiple 50 can handle it no problem haven't given up a completion yet. I learned along time ago learn something believe in it evolve with it. There's no magic bullet especially when your not doing thing's write to begin with. All defenses are sound if you know how to coach it and adjust it depending on who your playing. Most times the answer is in what your doing but if you refuse to expand your knowledge you wont find it. I research a lot of different defenses and see what i can use from them all and try thing's but it doesn't mean i scrap what i'm comfortable with and know how to adjust. My opinion is stay the course and find how to make what you do work..,

I don't get it either. Youth teams generally pass about 90% of the time and youth spread teams still run more than they pass for the most part. I know Jake ran or still runs a 4-2-5. I remember him saying he loved it because he could attack some many different ways. It seems a bit personnel dependent for my taste. Plus you can attack all over the place in other defenses as well. Honestly, we were super vanilla on defense. We scouted heavily and were very team specific. We were able to defend just about everything from a 50. We had a 40 front installed as well for certain things and of course we could morph into a 60 but it was all still extremely simple. We almost never blitzed. Play solid coverage, force/ contain and gap responsibility and you don't need to get fancy. We didn't spend a bunch of time on defense scheme. Lots of tackling but little scheme. KISS. Plus it let up spend more time on other things, like scoring at will.  :P

One of the biggest reasons I was able to Morph was the quality of players I had for those years. Really good Corners and OSLB's who could do more than play down hill. Many times I was able to show the Offense their "Hot Receiver" and still get to the ball before it out of the QB's hands.

This year I dont have those types of kids. We are tiny comparatively speaking. Some are still struggling to understand and Mesh in Base.  Still learning how to adjust to various formations.  Yet we have seen maybe 10 passes in 3 games.  Completion rate 3/10 only one hurt a bit.  While I have the required 5 DB's they dont "Bring A Load" to cover the running game.   LOL
