Gap-8 Questions/Concerns
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:49:05 PM »
I think I am a little confused, and have some questions about the Gap-8 defense.

Now, I know the basic premise is that you have 8 linemen on the line of scrimmage. And, that you are filling 8 gaps.

However, I saw an article on USA Football saying that you can run this out of different fronts. Is this true? To me, that would be confusing because you don't have 8 men straight across on the defensive line. However, this may make sense, because in different scheme diagrams I have counted only 6 or 7 "true" linemen being up on the line (tackles, defensive ends).

So, although it may be easier to remember this defense by the number of men up on the line of scrimmage, is it actually named this because of how many gaps the defense is filling?

Any further explanation would be great, thanks.

It's not that's it's 8 linemen on the line. It's 8 players on the line having from dgap to dgap filled.

                 CR                   MLB                    CR
DE  LB  DT  DG  DG  DT    LB   DE
                        TE   o    o   C    o    o      TE
                     WB              QB                  WB
                                         FB
Not perfect but a good starting point.
