No bear crawling allowed!
« on: June 04, 2014, 06:29:22 PM »
I'm looking to switch up my D this year from a 4-4 to either a GAM or 10-1. In our league there is no bear crawling allowed. So, given that, would these Ds still hold up using a 3 pt stance.

Some info: I'm relatively inexperienced. This is my 3rd year coaching anything. I just stepped in to fill a vacancy and figured I could learn on the fly. The league was happy to have a committed body. Plus the time I've been able to spend with my son has been priceless.

We are a 5/6 grade youth team with about average size and talent.

Open any thoughts/help.

The 10-1 doesn't use bear crawlers. Does your league mandate a 3 pt stance for D-line?

3 pt stance, yes.

As for odd vs even front, I have no opinion. Just getting my feet wet trying to figure this out. I ran a 4-4 because that is what was run by the HC. It was more of a bend don't break D for us. I'd like to try putting my own signature on things. Again, I'm not a football guy but am involved because they needed help and it's been great for me and my son.

Coaches, will have 2 plus me for help on D.

So no 4 point stance...just a 3... what about a 6?

Shin splitting is cool because you beat up shins and no one wants to play anymore haha.

I believe what they are looking to avoid is contact below the knee. My first year coaching I had my D line bear crawling through the gaps and was told we weren't allowed to do that. If I remember correctly any contact below the knee that is initiated by the defender within the box  will draw a penalty. At least that is how it was explained to me.

I can post some diagrams later...if you look you can find some stuff...

You go 26 ...very similiar to 40 stack ...but theres a method to the slanting compliments of colts coach.

When youre in 26 if you install "crazy" good things are bound to happen.

Need to find ways to get pressure and get through gaps...shin splitting and gap rush is first...these packages are second

What's the youngest that you would recommend running 26 and blitzing to the 10?

On offense Coach have you thought of running a wedge play?  If they do not want hitting below the waist then wedge would be nearly impossible to stop.

Its dependant on your kids...on your coaching ability.

If the kids can count to three...
if the kids can understand...in/out/left/right

You can sendem from 26

5/6 grade. And remember I'm just new at this thing so please, baby steps. Any pointers, diagrams, where to look, is much appreciated.

As for the wedge, we just can't initiate contact. Once the boys hear WEDGE, they fall to the ground. Simple but effective.  We don't find it being run too much though.
