Confusion Over Who SE should block in Cover 3
« on: October 07, 2011, 09:47:26 PM »
I know from the manual that the SE should block the nearest deepest defender on running plays. So to me that means the SE who is on the left side of the formation would block the left side corner in a Cover 3.

If it is a play to the right hand side though, like 24, could the SE block the safety instead of the corner over him in a cover 3? Or would the SE block that left hand side corner all day?

Thanks.

The SE should never block the man over him which would be the corner. It is the nearest deepest defender on his track route which should be a safety or OLB. When the play goes to the right side, the SE should be running his pass #3 route to put the safety in conflict or let you see a man coverage of the corner which would open up the 47 Speed.

For a run left - Yes.

But this is the reason the SE is standing by you on the sideline - So that you can tell him who to block.  In a 4-4 Cover 3, the corners are usually inferior to the safety which maybe/might mean you want the SE to track block him.  But, if it's Inverted Cover 3, that stud safety will run right over your SE (Unless you call "Swap Ends").  That's why the base rule of "nearest, deepest defender" is in place.  Your SE will at least have a chance versus a cover 3 corner and, if that corner does make the tackle, you made 5+ yards.

If you assign the SE to a Cover 3 safety on "24", expect to get a clipping call.  The SE passes behind the FS who is covering the "24" run in order to let you see if he's open on "Pass Right #3".  The odds the SE are open are 50-50.  The odds your QB can hit him are somewhat less (maybe 1 in 3 tops) but, on 2nd and 2 and you know he's open, why not try it and find out?

Because, if it's INC, so what?

Makes a lot of sense. Will try it next practice.

Thank you.
