Just ordered material...
« on: January 03, 2018, 05:02:44 PM »
Greetings all!!!

So after losing in the championship  :'( I am taking the next step to better my team and hopefully take them to the next level. I have ordered the DC Wing-T power point, Boise install DVDs, and the Running DVDs. Any advice on how/what to implement with 8-9 year olds would be most appreciated.

I still need to convince my peers that this change will be a good one. I was able to implement the KillerBee last year which got us to the ship, now we need some offensive fire power. Let me know what you all recommend, thanks!

What offense were you running last year?

The OC ran mostly  Straight T but had a Power I, Pistol, and Spread package as well. The organization has been Straight T for the last 50 years (just celebrated that accomplishment this year).

My age group has the youngest coaches and are more open to change. Moving from the Straight T to Wing T doesn't seem like too much of a stretch and could give us the fresh new look to catch our opponents off guard.

Sounds like you live in Michigan. Only place I ever see T. Interesting though, when I was in HS in NJ in the early to mid 70s, we actually ran "T". Off of that, we would take a back and move him to a wing and was still able to run the same plays. I don't know if it was a "multiple" T or not, but I remember the scheme.

Sounds like you ran a little of everything. Hopefully focusing on one system will help you make the step up next season. Hope it works for you.

I have ran this offense mainly with the 7-11 year olds.
By far the easiest and quickest way to install the offensive formations is what I called formation frenzy. It gets the kids to see how simple the offense is and builds confidence.
After the formations are in I would use the tags to only what you may need. keep it limited as this offense can get away from you and you will have way more put in than you need.
I would choose a series that fits what you wish to accomplish.
I started with the belly series but quickly found out that I LOVE the jet series so I blended the 2 and that is what we ran so I just used those tags.
I used formations to gain the advantage. We could out formation a defense and chose the matchups we wanted and ran away from their best defender or made sure he was blocked.

Formation Frenzy was crucial to our success.

Was offense the reason you lost? I mean, if you were scoring points then maybe what you were doing was fine. Just playing devils advocate here. Clark's material is great. At least the free stuff I have seen and I have no doubt the pay stuff is at least as good. I just want to make sure that you don't fall into the two traps many youth coaches fall into. The first is that the issue is scheme. It can be a problem if what you are doing makes no sense but if you made it to the championship you must have been scoring points. Then again, a good team might of exposed a bad scheme. The second issue is that youth coaches often lean heavily towards offense. It is easy to do. Offense is easier to comprehend for most new coaches. Plus we all want to be the mad scientist offensive guru and be the next Gus Malzahn and get hired at a big time university. So my advice is to go ahead and install Clark's offense but don't ignore the defensive side of the ball or specials and especially look at how you practice. And if none of that applies to you, great, hopefully it might be insightful to some other coach.

The power point is awesome. It is by far the best power point I have on youth football. Well worth the money you spent on it.

I appreciate it coach. I'll be in touch as we get into the material and the questions begin  ;)

Was offense the reason you lost? I mean, if you were scoring points then maybe what you were doing was fine.

I believe our biggest problem has been the 100 plays but can't run any perfectly syndrome and the inability to adjust the offense to what the defense does. Don't get me wrong, our offense scored. However, I believe they scored because we had superior talent, not because we were effectively running the plays.

I was doing the same thing on Defense. Installing a 3-5-3, 6-2, 4-4, 5-3, 6-3 was what I though I needed to be doing. This past season I simplified; taught DC's Killer Bee, taught the kids to read and adjust. We had 24 points scored on us in 8 regular season games  8). We lost 20-14 in the championship, and the 14 we scored were in the first 6 minutes of the game, and then... nothing  :'(. The D faltered with exhaustion. I think focusing on one offense that can adjust to what the defense is doing can get us to finally punch the ticket and give my D a little breathing room for mistakes.

Sounds like you are on the right path. Learning from your mistakes is rare in youth coaching.

With 8's and 9's you probably won't be able to pass unless you get lucky.  The "Belly" attack of the FB is based on being able to throw the ball 10-17 yards.  If you can't pass, defenses will mass up front to stop you.  To offset this I would include Super Power Wedge (SPW) and "QB wedge" as defenses are usually not prepared for this play.  If you practice getting 10 yards on SPW you should get 5-7 yards if you run it maybe one in four plays (The "D" will start to submarine you if you overdo it.). "38 Power Toss" is another play from base.

The second series to install is the "Jet" or "Quick Hit" series.  You'll see how fast these plays hit on the PowerPoint and that's what you want versus massed defenses - FAST!  The plays hit faster than an 8-9 year old can think.  Try and follow them on the PowerPoint on who has the ball.  When you look at the install DVD, do exactly as you see me do.  Run "47 Speed" and work on the LT's block.  Then run the reverse.  Then fake the reverse to SE and WB keeps going.  Then have the QB fake the "Speed" and run "QB wedge" (Which I did not do on the DVD as they did not know how to wedge.).  This goes in fast and it works.  8-9 year olds are like kittens.  They chase string.  The ball is the string.  Get the defense to think the ball is going one way and then reverse it.  Throw in a triple reverse where QB hands to WB on "47" and WB gives to SE who then gives back to the TE (Add the QB to the HB blocking the DE.  Do not pull LT and LG ("Speed") on this play or the "D" will get in the backfield.).  Get their heads spinning.

Then, throw in formations like "HB Over" and "Backs Over".  "Backs Over" will let you "26 Power" versus massed defenses.  "HB Over" gives you "34 Quick" and an extra blocker for FB on "24".  Most opposing DC's will not even notice what you just did.   Look at "Trips".  Check Chiefs58's posts.   "Cross" block whenever possible.  Once you have added three new formations with specific plays to go with them, the 8-9's on the other side of the ball will have their heads explode in their helmets.  They're not able to deal with that.

Make sure WB does not start forward from motion prior to the snap.  5 yard penalty!  Also, anyone running left carries the ball in their left hand.  Spare yourself a fumble.

On defense, turn your own kittens into cats.  Don't let them chase string.  Never let the other team do to you what you're doing to them.

Good luck!

All great points and good words of wisdom DC. Throughout my life I've tried to live by one simple rule when learning something new, "Don't reinvent the wheel and listen to those who came before you!". I look forward to putting things in this coming spring season and then going full out in the fall. I'll be getting in contact with Chiefs58 as well as pretty I'm sure I saw his posts about winning his championship with KB and DC Wing-T in the same age group.

This year will be a climb but hopefully well worth the fight!
