Problems with Toss
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:09:54 AM »
We've been having problems in gaining yardage on our toss play (38/47).  I think I may have installed in incorrectly.

Is this correct (38 Toss as an example)

SE to S
LT - crab/cover for LG
LG - pull
C - SAB left
LG - SAB left
RG - SAB left
TE - first LB
WB - ILB through split
FB - load DE
QB - pitch and lead for HB
HB - run outside of QB lead

Is something not right with the above?

Why are you not pulling your RG?

Yep...on Toss both guards pull to the hole called.

If you only want one to pull...then the call is "right" for the right guard or "left for the left..

Sometimes I will call Right 38 Power Pitch

Right(right guard pulls) 38 Power(wingback motion to 8) Pitch(not a handoff although maybe there is a different word)

Funny - I've read these manuals a hundred times and never caught that.  Thanks.

38/37 toss has been one of our best plays. Both G's pull, QB lead blocks (I think Clark says for the HB to put his hand on the outside shoulder of the QB - ours never does cause he is so fast he just goes to the outside....sometimes I wish he would wait to take advantage of the cut back)

FB takes his 3 steps and gets out in front of our HB most times too....so we have a wall of blockers.

I actually scrimmaged a team once and this play had the other teams coaches furious because the HC was yelling at the DC saying "why can't you stop a simple toss play"...the DC says "they have like 8 blockers" LOL!

Guess you just had to be there.

Next question - does FB go after outside defender, or load the DE?   If not, does the RG (on 38 Toss) get the DE?

I am assuming the T's just block down to cover the A and B gaps left open.

Man, no wonder we could not get this to work...had it all wrong.

The manual doesn't use SAB blocking.  So it only pulls LG.

To pull both you must use a "G" scheme from mini splits.  RT must block all the way down to a NG for RG to pull.  Now somebody must have man over RT which would be WB (track block).

Now the RG pulls through the hole.

To be consistent, it's usually best to tell that slow as mud RT to aim at the RG's helmet.  This will get him to "A" gap quicker.

I'll try to pull both Gs, tell the RT to block down hard and then have the WB power block/crack the DE to create a pile of 6th graders where the 6 hole would be.  Should leave the 8 hole with my QB, both Gs and the ball carrier(HB) headed to the house if the TE can get a LB and the FB does anything to anybody.

I'll post back tomorrow after we try it in practice/scrimmage.
