What was an issue for my tiny brain to understand, was having the OLB's & the Safeties read the EMOL. This allowed us to make adjustments very simply. It also made our run fits easy. I had always been a 5-2 monster coach, this is much simpler. The key to being simpler is we played faster.

The other great thing is we could dial up any stunts or blitzes we needed without making massive changes. We used 9 players in the stunts & really had no confusion. We didn't ever blitz a corner although it can be done fairly easy. Even though we always aligned in 4-0-4, we still were able to give the offense a ton of different looks. The season prior we played 4-2-5 &  constantly had alignment issues. We aligned properly 78% of the time. This season we aligned properly 92% of the time.

Our communication was far superior this season. We were able to do a great job on screens, boots, & reverses. Due to injury we had to play a small sophomore at CB & FS at times. He is 5'6" 135lbs. Not only did he do a great job in coverage & run support, but he had 8 turnovers. He had 6 int's, & 2 fumble recoveries. He just seemed to be a ball magnet. Obviously, his size was concerning. It never was an issue as he often came up on much bigger backs and made sure tackles.

Outstanding, coach!  Could you share what the specific reads were that they were making on the EMOL?

We do a read & fit period every day. The ILB's & DL's work together, & OLB's & Safeties work together.

If the EMOL is an eligible receiver the S looks for a pass read first.

If EMOL blocks down OLB will spill S will contain.

If EMOL blocks out OLB contains S fills the alley.

If EMOL gives a pass read they play their assignment.

That is the basics, where it can get confusing if EMOL gives a run read on a pass( think RPO), so our S's will read EMOL to #2 OR #3. The thing to remember is the coverage dictates the front. We will change things to fit a particular offense. Obviously, when we play Single Wing or Flexbone the reads will change slightly. That Is where coaching comes in.

Assuming Pass read is watching the OT?

Who has Slot (Safety)?
Not MPP... ONE TASK!  Teach them!  :)

It's a classic triangle read. EMOL to WR to ball. They pick it up very fast.

The other thing to consider is what is the coverage. The coverage always dictates to the front. Most times the Safety covers that Slot on a vertical, but on an out cut for example it could be the OLB or the Corner.

Teaching the reads is really a matter of doing it everyday. Once the OLB's & the S's realize they are working together life becomes easy. Since we see so many different formations this is the easiest way for our players to see & understand their responsibilities. We always tell our defenders if they can count to 4 they can play defense.

Lastly the thing that can throw a monkey wrench into it being easy is whether a receiver or back is attached or unattached. You have to have a plan for TE, TE & Wing, HBack, and so forth. Often what your opponent does will depend on what you do.
