--Yes, you can also do a Honda or Subie engine (BOTH of which I have access to).  I've read and read and read about those swaps because I simply HATE the VW 1600.  And I've owned a '75 Bug and a '72 Ghia in the past.  As a matter of fact, I reached out to Fantom Works (the "reality" hot rod TV show) about doing an engine swap, but the response I got was "We really don't do those sorts of things."

--Yep, I grew up on VW Greats magazine, as well as Dune Buggies & Hot VWs magazine.  Both featured sand rails in every issue.  So with this one, I had to make some additions to make it street legal (for NC).  So we added side mirrors, a hand-operated windshield wiper and an emergency brake.  Had some engine and alternator issues, as well.  Finally drove it home today.  Now, I have to find a place to put it.

Honda D-series, 1.6 SOHC I4 125 bhp @ 6600 rpm, 106 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm. (from a '95 del Sol soho VTEC).

I worked for Honda for 8 years. If youre seriously going to do the swap I can help. They will take 8 pounds of boost with no mods and the 125 HP will be close to 200

Yeah we dyno'd a VW a while back and almost had to kick the rollers to get it moving. It ended up with less than 30 HP
Least amount we've had on the dyno besides a moped bout 10 years ago

I'm with you. Minnesota has a couple of weeks of cold weather, but after that you have active springs, warm summers and stunning falls. I'll take mosquitos and ticks over rattlesnakes and scorpions any day. No hurricanes, sand storms or earthquakes. We don't get as much snow as Buffalo, NY or upper Michigan and if does snow a lot, this is my shovel:
