thank you Dave. We shall see. 3pm tomorrow kickoff time (our conference is weird and we play on saturdays rather than fridays because of the extreme travel for some games).

Black and gold is driving 3.5 hours to play us tomorrow.
That is how it is in New Mexico. The local high school team would routinely travel that far to play a game. Crazy.

Our closest away games are about a 2 hour drive with the furthest being 4 hours. We are based in Grand Rapids, MI. We travel to Ann Arbor, Detroit, NW Ohio, North side of Indianapolis and the rural towns just south of Chicago.

Our conference is weird. We arent actual schools. We are the private school kids who dont have a team and homeschool kids. Our 25 players come from 8 different schools and 12 homeschool kids. We have 4 kids who have never played before. 3 kids who are 14 years old. Our entire Oline is 3 freshman and 2 sophmores. As much as I'd love for our team to get the respect that more traditional public school teams get but so many of these boys wouldnt have the chance to play if not for our team. I do love being able to give these kids the chance to play learn and play.

2 of our guys from last years team went on to play college ball this year. By MHSAA rules they werent allowed to play for any public school teams unless they transferred from their academically top rated private school that does not offer athletics.

We arent actual schools.

--So no weight room.

--And that's the same for your opponents?  Or are they "real" schools?  I coached for 4 years at a charter high school.  Played a little bit of everybody and had to travel all over the state to get games.  We couldn't get in a conference because all of the schools around here are 3A or 4A and we had 19-24 players and no JV.  So we were 1A-size (10th smallest high school football program in the state) in a 3A/4A area.  Made no sense to do football there.  Now, they don't have a football team.  Or even a high school, anymore.

Sabot

DP pretty much hit it on the head. Slow off the ball, slow to develop, actually slow. They look like a bad youth team grown up. Play solid defense & you will be fine.

No weight room is correct. I did work out a sponsorship deal with a local chain of gyms to give players a free membership and we fund raise to cover the cost of discounted time with trainers at those gyms. 3 of my players drive an hour just to get to practice with many others in the 30 minute commute range.

Opponents in our conference are similar teams to us. Out of conference teams we play are usually smaller public school teams or private schools with small programs as well. We rent our practice field from one of the schools that doesnt have a team. We rent our game field from one of the local powerhouse public school teams (we rent the middle school field due to cost $100 an hour vs $450 an hour).

Thanks Joe. I made that same comment about them looking like a big but bad youth team to our special teams coordinator.

Whoa.  You have a tougher gig than most coaches, regardless of age level.

No booster club, no weight room, no decades worth of alumni to reach out to as a base for fundraising.  There are a lot more off season stresses. We have to actively recruit and advertise just to let people know that we are here as another option for their kid.  The public school program that my kids are a part of has a 60 man Varsity roster. 20 of those kids will never see the field outside of garbage time. I dont have that option with this small roster. If you sign up be ready to work because I need you on game day.

Well I dont know where the kids we played today were when that film was posted but these guys had a few monsters.

It was a back and forth slug match. We were up in the 4th quarter and they wedged the crap out of us behind their 3 biggest linemen to score and go ahead by 2 with only 2 seconds left. Our boys look defeated. Their bench is on fire with happiness.

We line up to receive the kickoff. They onside and one of our big kids falls on it with no time lost. Down by 2, 2 seconds and 55ish yards from the endzone. Our QB throws a hail Mary that is caught by one of our brand new (his first practice with us was thursday) he makes 7 people miss and scores. We go to 3-0, only undefeated team left in the conference.

I'll post the entire game film when I have a chance to take a look at it. I'm dead tired after the adrenaline dump of that finish. Plus my 12 year old daughter took the video so I need to see the quality of it. I'll post the whole game rather than highlights and you guys can beat me up over some of our bad play.

I agree 100% Dusty. That's the only reason to post it. I am a firm believer that without you all I would still be coaching youth. I've learned so much from you guys over the years.

I run Flexbone and it's not Flexbone, splits are too tight, motion is off and no read/pitch relationship, FB is too far back. Honestly I'm just shocked that this is varsity level?
