The biggest culprit is a Breakdown in Role Discipline!

Indeed it is, Scott!  Great point.

Sadly, the real cancers can drill a lot of holes in the boat faster than you can patch them....and when numbers and actual ability are issues...you have a lot of teaching to do...

Definitely a tough one. I've found that convincing a young man, especially a talented young man to put the team's needs ahead of his own wants can be the hardest part of coaching. You're often competing with the kid's parents, uncles, bigger than life celebrity personas, not to mention the ever present testosterone. Then, despite working your tail off to get though to a kid, it doesn't always end up as a warm and fuzzy anecdote.

The worst is when the cupboard is bare, as you mentioned. Then you have little choice than to put up with the cancers. I've been there and it sucks.

I think I just helped my kids with these experiences...

1- Iím going to be the head coach of the JV team and call the offense. This guarantees that players working hard in practice are rewarded...off season too...My newly hired DC will be the DC for both varsity and JV.  The new DC left in July last year for a more talented roster, an easier schedule, a bigger title....but he actually asked to return and our kids like him and my assistants and I like him too...this puts me in a better mood.

2- if the staff is cohesive, itís contagious

First as you guessed, my first priority is to grow the program with more players wanting to play.

I'd suggest that you be radical and contrarian in your approach.  Just taking the TIME to cover all the ways you can get out your message is radical enough, when many coaches are just sitting on their hands.

Why read by candlelight when the lightbulb is a better idea; especially when the masses say that "candlelight works just fine."  ??

Use your strengths as a communicator, teacher and friend to get across whatever it is that your mission statement says.  (You do have a mission statement, don't you?)

Bottom line is, if you are content to do it the same way that everyone else does it, there is no way to stand out, or have the advantage.  If you coach with the same style and rhetoric as other coaches, how do you expect to be more successful than they are?  You have the tools available, if you know how to use them.

This am ( and many days prior) I am again looking at my 32 projected returning players...I am projecting my varsity starters, depth as well as a potential JV lineup ( no freshmen included yet) ...

Looking at the 46 GUTS defense...

See photo attached...notice scribbles indicating cross training, notice parentheses indicating possible position switch...I see about 14 guys as Varsity...there are about four more that have to grow up fast.

That's always how it is.  It's like the ocean, back & forth.  But for whoever leaves, there's a pleasant surprise that moves in during June or July.
