Just bought Jacks 63 ebook...
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:19:48 PM »
I'm reading through it and still a little confused. Is there a DVD version of this? I'm the kind of person that needs to see things in action.

A couple of things Im confused about:

Are the DE's the guys outside the traditional DE's, or are the DE's the players in the stack that are playing head up on the tackles?

Maybe I haven't got to it yet, but is there a section that explains the exact type of player that should be in each position?

DE's are the "far" outside guys.  The stacks are DT's and LB's.

Chapter 1 not only lays out each position and their alignment it also discusses which positions are MPP friendly.  My suggestion is your reread chapter 1 and chapter 2 as that goes over the nuts and the bolts of the defense.

The OLB is the backer over the DT in the stack.  The DE is the guy outside of the last interior offensive player on the edge (WB, TE, OT)...

Coach Rob, let me know how it goes. I'm running it for the first time this year also. I'm lining the DE's up 3 yards from EMLOS just as mentioned in the book.  I run the Red call only so far, haven't introduced the stacks yet. I've started drilling the Pass triangle the past couple of nights along with Tampa 2 coverage aspects. My only concern is the PA seam route. I have a very instinctive MLB, very aggressive, that bites hard on PA. Just need to do a lot of reps. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Drilling the Playaction along with the compliment run play in HALF LINES will go along way in helping him.  He is at 6 to 8 yards so that he can flow down as he reads...if the QB turns his back and he sees a TE or WB release vertically up that he should slow play it...  Your MIKE once he gets the read and reaction will get a lot of INT's...

It is not uncommon for us to have a team get a few pop or seam passes on us early because our MIKE is coming down hill hard...once it happens his training will set in and he will be more patient and it will lead to turnovers.  RED should also help you out as well with additional coverage support.

Will do. All I care about stopping is the sweep, reverse, and lead. That's all I see. I scrimmaged 2 teams, and play 2 real games so far, and seen on 1 pass out of all 4. Last week lost my first game. We were up 16-6 at half time, lost 19-16. Once I threw my MPP's kids in we couldn't contain. The team we played had two extremely fast RB's. Even though we pursued pretty good, once he cut back to the opposite side of the field he was gone! *mad*

Ok I re-read it and things are making more sense. Quick question on the line shifts. If I'm facing an unbalanced line do I move both stacks over or just the stack on the unbalanced side?

O O C O O O O    OR   O O C O O O O

Both stacks.
A football player needs to be three things in order to be a good football player. He must be agile, mobile, and hostile.

Both stacks shift on a SHIFT call one man over.  DOUBLE SHIFT two men over.

This allows us to keep our stacks aligned so we can overload the weakside (no shift call) or SHIFT to the unbalanced side if we feel the need to balance up.

I just put in the 6-3 last night, and the kids LOVED IT! I asked what they liked better and the whole team said 6-3 stack, even the kids that dont play in it. They were my scout offense and said the D was aggressive, the word I want those kids to live by!  I only allow my best 11 to play in it. I'm still running the WT6 for now, but wanted to install the 6-3 and see if my starters could grasp it.

We still have some coaches that want to run with the WT6, but  even they said this defense offers way more pressure and made kids play way more aggressive than usual.

CoachRob, I found the defense very simple to install. Even with that I still have to remind the boys regarding alignment..OLB's floating too far back...MLB starts cheating up, my strong side CB last game actually pulled himself way up inside of our DE!! I asked him what he was doing and he said he was getting bored and wanted in on the action...had to hammer him a little. I haven't introduced the stacks yet however. If your facing a sweep team, what I tried and found worked very well was repping the shoot the sideline pursuit drill exactly as Jack describes. I walked the pursuit angles with every player first, both sides, sped up the drill, then went with the two backs facing each other full speed, wrap drill. I make all the boys do their job and then 11 helmets to the ball full speed. Don't forget and make sure the back side CB slow plays then caps the alley and DE's are disciplined in their pursuit angles..they start to get lazy after a few reps..don't let them do it. I don't think we've given up 5 yards on a sweep play yet..the compress and get them running east/west, protect the alley concept is great. We were burned once however on a cutback..important to make sure OLB's know the correct pursuit angle...once the RB see's he has no where to go on the sweep, he might try and cut back through the C gap. I run the Red call only, line 'em up and let 'em play.

Good stuff! I plan on running the stacks primarily, I love the pressure it brings. I just gotta make sure those kids are locating the ball and just not rushing into the backfield. Do you play MPP players on your D?

I do indeed play MPP's on defense at DG but the O doesn't know who is and who isnt.  So the net effect of doing so is ZERO.  I am blessed to have 24 kids so the concept of them keeping track of the weakness at any one spot is also about nil.

One play, two plays, or an entire series, just depends on the overall effect the defense is having.  If they are getting blown off the ball, I do change them out.  Never want to leave them in there and have their confidence pounded into the ground if you can avoid it.
