First Game as OC
« on: September 03, 2010, 03:25:16 PM »
On Saturday we have our first game, and I will be calling the plays for the first time. The kids have worked hard and are as ready as they ever will be. Any great tips or advice for a rookie OC?

Run the Power!! then when in doubt, run it AGAIN.
Good luck coach.

Have a list of plays, even if you only have like 3 of them. Know what the purpose of each play is. Know your 3rd and 10 play.

Decide on your keys early against the defense.  Have someone else watch your line, and pick your defensive keys early, once you have them go with them and trust yourself.  Confidence spreads!

Don't get caught up watching the ball.

Good luck Matt. Like I said in the PM, your opponent is strong vs the sweep and weak against off tackle and wedge.  Watching them the other day, it doesn't look like much has changed.  The DC is very good and I expect he'll adjust.  Be ready for that.

Write down the plays as you call them, and put yardage next to it.

for example

HB ovr 24.........+5
SE ovr 23..........+7
HB ovr 24.........+2
SE ovr 23..........+7
so on ...

Later in the game if I need a play that gets 7yrd for a first, I'm calling SE ovr 23

Coaches - Thanks for all the advice. This forum has helped my learning so much. We won the game 14 to 7 scored on POWER and a punt return. WEDGE went big for us a couple of times as well. Time to celebrate a little bit and get ready to go back to work on Monday!

Good job, Matt.  We got WORKED.  Don't want to talk about it right now.
