Question on OL backside blocking rules
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:28:19 PM »
Many of the plays show the backside OL reach blocking.  Are the GDL rules still used when reach blocking?  FOr example, I'm running a Right 45 Kick against a 5-3 with DTs playing a 4 technique.  Who does my right OT block?  Lately I have been getting killed on this play.  Seem like it develops too slowly.  I realize it's supposed to be on "1", with a short motion from the wingback, but it takes forever.  In fact the playside DE was in the backfield before the pulling G could even get to him.

The short answer..."yes".

I believe the RT, in your example, would go to second level and block backside LB. His job in GDL would be "D", to "replace" the pulling Right Guard, but there is no one over the Right Guard.  His complete job is to block anyone from a "2" tech to a "3" tech, and if no one there...go up to LB.

In a thread a while back I asked how everyone teaches backside blocking rules and this is a quote from Clark...

Quote

In explaining it to your backside linemen, it works like this:

Guard: "If there's anyone between you and the center that's your guy."

Tackle: "Anyone between you or over the guard."

Otherwise, both go to LBer.

Notice, the guard and tackle have different rules.  If this draws blank stares, have both sides block GOL.  But GOL versus "2" and "4" techs means nobody goes for BS LBer.

First, you have to run the play from "Mini" splits or the timing will be off as well as leakage will occur.

Second, you're running the wrong play.  It would work much better versus a "3" tech than a "4".

Try running where they "ain't".  Some suggested plays:

"Maxi, 20 Midline Trap"
"Maxi. Left 32 Trap"
"Maxi, right 61 Trap"
"Maxi, right 21 Trap"

And, if you have WB subtract 2 steps from the ball:

"Maxi, Right 41 Trap"

These should all work better than running to "where they are" (a DT and DE side by side.).

Notice the cue "trap" in each suggestion.  Trap a 4 tech all day.
If the playside DT is in a 3 Tech and DE is in a 5...cross block them.
There is always an answer, the BEST is...run where they ain't!
