2010 CLINIC NOTES FROM THE NATIONAL CHAMPS:

Joe Pendry-Offensive Line Coach

“Bama Offensive Line Play”

3 Phases of Blocking

1. Take off- get out of your stance. Make it fit to your offense.
Use the boards and chutes

2. Contact- explosion-aiming point, unlock hips, play low to high

3. Finish- Finish the block

Drills with the 3 Phases

Take off- Under the Chute with boards

Contact- Against sled (or man), 1 and 2 steps, roll hips and explode (no drive)

Finish- Fit and Finish- already fitted up

Alabama Run Game

1. Inside Zone- to Tight End and Split End sides

2. Out side Zone- to Tight End and Split End sides

3. Power Play-Double Team and Kick Out

4. Single Back Power-Try and get a Double Team somewhere

5. Outside Zone with Toss-Lineman first shuffle and drive block

6. Lead Draw- 2 Back

7. Strong and Weak side Counter

Avoid One-Hit wonder plays.

Zone Blocking

1. 1st step-Lateral Step

2. 2nd step-Aiming step, through outside numbers

3. After Initial Hit, it becomes a drive block

Uses #s to find out who blocks who. Center blocks 0, Guard blocks 1, Tackle blocks 2, TE blocks 3.

RB aims at B gap. Open step, crossover, then Press B gap. If someone takes away B gap, go to another gap.

His philosophy is that the further away the RBs aiming point is from the ball, the more chances for mistakes.

2010 COOL CLINIC NOTES (Courtesy of Coach Kevin Burns)

Joe Pendry- Alabama OL Coach

1.   Know what you’re doing and how you’re going to do it to eliminate penalties.
a.   Penalties happen when kids are surprised by something, off balance, unsure of what they’re doing.
2.   Imperative to get 2nd step on the ground and Finish the block = no holding
3.   They # their defenders for Zone (C blocks 1, PSG blocks 2, PST blocks 3, PSTE blocks 4, BSG block backside 1, etc)
4.   Important that RB press the hole on zone and not turn up too soon. It will screw the OL. RB has just as important a role in the blocking (with his path) as the OL do
5.   On Cntr, using vertical double teams
a.   Teaches PSG to replacement step drive second step upfield through crotch of 3-tech
b.   Teaches the PST to hop step to get to the 3-tech to seal of pressure.
