Need help with youth football kicking game
« on: October 02, 2011, 09:09:15 PM »
I have 3 good kickers that are 9 yo old. Do anyone have any info on how to teach extra point and field goal kicking? I want to work on this now because our league offer 2 points for extra points when you kick them. I have two kids that can kick from the tee 30 yards easy. Thank you all for your help.

If you get some help. Let me know! We have the same 2 point rule and in my three years as head coach I have not had a kid succesfully kick one in a game yet. :'(

This may not be of much help, but our kicker who is pretty good, and has been making XPs for us since he was 8 works with the special teams coach at our high school, so you might go there for some advice.  We're lucky that he used to kick and even had a cup of coffee in the nfl.  But you might find some good drills and guidance there.

In my experience...

In previous seasons, we have tried showing the kids how to take their steps, where there plant foot should land, how to take the first step, etc...never worked out very well...the boys were thinking instead of kicking...

Lot's of kids now days have played soccer (at least here in Texas)...and when they play soccer, they don't measure their steps, they don't worry about how the plant, they just run up to it and kick it...

So this season, we put the ball on the tee for the boys to kick...and if they asked how to kick it we said, just kick it...we had 3 or 4 boys who kicked it well, so we looked at them some more off the tee and off the extra point block, telling them to just kick it....one stood out above the rest as far as consistency went...the only thing we had to fix was telling him to keep his eye on the ball...

Did you browse this section? It has been discussed.

My deduction.

Kicking a PAT or a FG is like mastering your golf swing. Therefore until you find a kid that plays golf...forget about it.  ;) It has to be the number one most difficult play to exicute yet the NFL can do it in their sleep?  ???

Makes sense that Smurfs cant do this well because its a play that absolutely cannot be "dumb'd down". It is what it is.

I thought I had it figured out once in practice. In fact I think I even posted something about it. Must have been a fluke. Quit working. Most of the teams in our league can do it. Not us!

Tim

We have done well with this over the years and can actually kick FG's at the upper age levels.

Its takes committment. Once its even physically possible....9...10 years old....5 reps a day every practice for life. Like B, our league awards a kick as 2 points unitl the 8th grade level. Then is back to normal rules.

So...good sense says....get this play working ASAP like you have discovered. Every time your opponents score you could easily be down two scores for the price of one.

How we do it is near impossible to describe. I had a very good semi pro kicker teach us about 8 years ago.

The chest must lead the body and the eyes stay on the football. Its like golf but I suck at golf so I will stop there.  ;)

They play some excellent soccer in Texas.

At Huey's there's a coach with a kid who doesn't get much height from a place kick, but does from a drop kick, so he was asking about using it for hang time on kickoffs.  I have the same problem with my place kick, and can get it over the bar from a drop kick -- if only the accuracy were there!

I don't know about your league, but in our league, kicked PATs are also worth 2 points, AND you can't rush the kicker. It's a free play. So all I do is just send my kicker and holder over to the goal posts and kick for 5 or 10 yards.
