My former oc created this, worked well but dcwt is best ran under center

A team in our town had been running the wing t for a couple years, going 20-0 with two titles.  Just rolling people.  Speed and power.  This year they weren't as stacked as previous years and really only had a great QB and an awesome TB.  They went Pistol a lot.  I mean A LOT.  It was probably their base.

I think it works best when you have a QB that can really run.  They ran zone read concepts out of it (I'm assuming the give or keep was called in the huddle). And even had a lot of option game.  They pretty much just ran iso, sweep, zone read, and option.  If they wanted to throw, they motioned the TB out and threw streaks and flat routes to him.

Why not just run the DCWT under center, but install the gun series if you have the personnel to take advantage of that? I've been looking at the DCWT gun series lately and think it's really quite interesting. Thoughts?

Why not just take advantage of the pistol footwork by moving the QB to derringer depth, 2-4 ft. behind the center's butt, and keep the rest of the backfield as in ordinary wing T?

Theres really nothing "dum" about this, Randy (author of this) my old OC liked the speed sweep, belly, and formation but fell in love with pistol. So he combined just those things, theres very little DC language.

It did help us make the playoffs

I know of three coaches that have run a DC gun/pistol.  Two were in contact with each other on this board.  They both said they couldn't get their QB's to reverse pivot and so went to this.  They didn't miss the "Quick hits" and thought it worked great.  There should be a post by me pointing out I could read the play that was coming and them both admitting that - Yes - they could not disguise the play.

That's fine if you only play a team once.  Not so fine if you play them twice.

Shortly afterwards, both coaches went silent.

The third coach tried it this year and with the same claims of initial success.  Then silence.

My conclusion is that, if you can't beat an opponent under center and you're up against them in the playoffs, you can do this to catch them by surprise.  One would need to have a simple, one week, means to make the transition.

Any volunteers?  :)

Otherwise, my expectation would be, if you use the gun to get to the playoffs, that your appearance there will be brief.  But I could be wrong.

You aint wrong...

We had initial success. Looked good, we were scoring. Second seed going into the playoffs, practice for the first round went great, Snaps Looked AWESOME the whole week. Warmups before  the playoff game snaps looked great...... NO indication of what was to happen........
15 friggen bad snaps in a game where we only had 24 offensive plays. lost 4 snaps and was still only behind by one score at the end of the game.. problem was we were behind.

Just go under center.... or work on the snaps all practice with 2 players ALL day long.

I still dont know what happened my team was young, maybe nerves,... dunno  :-\

I wont go back to it, it alters the series too much.

No reverse pivot etc

I think the direct snap wing T is awesome AS an addition to any youth offense. It gives the defense fits to deal with. There is so much you can do with it, it can really showcase a stable of RB's or feature 1 stud. It's advantage is the sweep, the motioning wing or slot hit the outside so fast and they are  4 yds deep so the defensive ends have to take an angle to get them NOT to mention I dont need to block anybody on the LOS until I get to playside B gap, that means I got a lot of blockers heading to 2nd level and safety.

Modesto Christian had a championship team that ran something like the above formation with a wing T playbook. I wasnt attracted to this offense because of its success, or because they had a D1 stud at QB/RB I was attracted because I saw its potential vs youth defenses.
This is a balanced formation and can run dang near every single wing play (with motion) DW play if ya bring in the SE, and all wing T plays, has 4 receivers for down field threat.

The direct snap / gun formation that I thought was most DCWT friendly...

From this formation I think theres some advantages and some disads pro/con

pro - 47 speed is now on steriods
con - the 33 quick goes bye bye
pro -option game from this is awesome, QB running downhill to DE, big time potential!
con - as an addition it does introduce different mesh points
