Thanks for all the input coach..I'll be re-reading this thread for awhile....and I always read mahonz threads 3 or 4 times.  :)

LT....thanks for posting your video...with all the work you put in..I can't imagine parents having a problem with you.... :(

Yes, those parents who think their sons are super stars and feel they don't have to show up for practice during bye weeks and we had 2 bye weeks. You would be surprised GH!

Hmmm, interesting that you say that.
I was thinking that defenses like these would be more vulnerable to the sweep, if you know how to out-formation and block it...

The Sweep is not a problem.

We designed our defense to take away the #1 play of a lot of youth offenses- the Sweep.
We also take away most of the "easy to complete" pass plays.

A lot of "Stud" RB's don't really like contact, and their effectiveness is diminished if you take away the outside.

This style of defense is vulnerable when the Stingers go too far upfield and the rest of the defense gets no penetration in the C-gap, and/or the alley players do not fill in time.

Coachbob, what are you running on defense? Maybe I missed it.

Our defense is variable from season to season.

Our defense is dependent on the number of kids we HAVE to play as interior down linemen. It is a brutal fact that in our league with the substitution rules we have that D-Line is the place to "hide" certain types of players.

The common thread with our various alignments is the use of "Stingers" (We call them OLB's, but the style of play comes directly from Roark's description of Stingers in the Wide Tackle 7 defense).

The other thing that we do in all of our defenses is jam (or stone) TE's. No TE ever gets a free release off the LOS. We don't want the TE's to be able to block our MLB or Safeties or to run down the seam for an easy pass completion.

We prefer to use:
3 down linemen (NT and 2DT's)
2 OLB's (Stingers)
1 MLB
2 CB's
2 Safeties
1 Rover (hybrid Safety/LB)

We also run:
1 NT
2 DT
2 OLB (Stingers)
1 MLB
2 SS
2 CB
1 FS

If we HAVE to use 4 down linemen, we will run a 4-3 (See DC43)
2 DT
2 DE
2OLB (Stingers)
1 MLB
2 CB
2 Safeties

All of the defenses are high pressure, attacking style defenses with minimum reads. We are bringing at least 5 (but usually 6 or 7 or 8) every play.

Inspiration for the defense comes from:

Wide Tackle 7 and 7 Diamond
46 (DC46 and Buddy Ryan)
John Reed's GAM
G.A. Moore's 10-1
DC-43
Double Eagle Flex (Desert Swarm and Dick Tomey)
"The Radar Defense" by Jules Yakapovich
"The Power 6 Invert Defense" by Duke Pasqualini

and dozens of other books and publications

Some of them I have heard of some I have not, I would assume if you are stoning the TE you would not be utilizing the stinger technique. What is the "The Power 6 Invert Defense" by Duke Pasqualini, it sounds interesting?

The "Power 6 Invert Defense" was written in the late 70's by Duke PASQUINI.

It is a 6-2 defense with an inverted Safety. It looks a lot like Gregory's 6-3, but the adjustments are a little more sophisticated. It was meant for high school level in the 1970's. I picked up a signed copy in a used bookstore for 12 bucks in 2004.

Coach,

We jam the TE's AND use the Stinger technique.

Depending on the alignment of the offense, and our defensive call, our defenses end up looking like a 9-1-1, 8-1-2, 7-1-3, 6-3-2, 6-1-4, 6-2-3, etc.

I know this is an old thread...but I just thought of another related question

follow up question for Coach bob and others (Flynn, etc)..

How do you align this defense to a double wing formation? with two wing backs..how do you adjust in cover 0 or cover 1?

FWIW...I bought the Power 6 Invert Defense book off of amazon market from a library in omaha nebraska for 9 bucks (includes shipping and tax)......Best nine bucks I have spent on defense since buying Jack's 6-3 book...
Similar defensive concepts.....highly recommended...I am learning a boatload of great info..Thanks for the recommendation
