Remember Bill Cosby talking about names?

We got yelled at so much, we thought our names were Jesus Christ and Dammit.  My dad would yell, "Dammit, get in here!."

"But Dad, I'm Jesus Christ!"

Thought Id share this...

I have already shared my SWAT adjustment...

and now for something youll really like....FAT!

The FS will adjust to and Jam and cover the Te (completely eliminating the dreaded pop pass) and you play cover 0 behind it or near the goal line you can play 5-7 short zones if you prefer. (this is the big trend in goal line defense these days because of the rubs/picks)

in any case, looks about like this....46 fans will love this...

Working on simple terminology....simple but multiple is always the goal

does this seem simple enough?

"guts" is our terminology to move our dts from 4 techs to 3 techs...

then I want terminology to move any of the 3 stacked backers to the line and play with a hand down...

Wall=  will as a lineman- will linebacker moves down as a 5 tech
Solid= sam on line=  sam linebacker moves down as 5 tech
Big= backer in gap- the mike goes down as a 2i in the A gap

so we can use a guts call and put mike, sam or will or any combination of them on the line...

you can ultimately end up with a man in each a gap, each b and each C or combinations of that.

----O-O-X-O-O-O
------T---N--T
GUTS

--O-O-X-O-O-O
W-T---N--T

GUTS - WALL

--O-O-X-O-O-O
---T----N--T--S
GUTS- SOLID

O-O-O-X-O-O-O
--W-T--N--T--S
GUTS- SOLID WALL

--O-O-O-X-O-O-O
---W-T--M-N-T-S
GUTS- BIG SOLID WALL

THE SPURS ARE STILL IN FORCE

OF COURSE there are other combinations such as....

--O-O-X-O-O
 W-T--N----T

WALL (NOTE, ONLY GUTS THE CALL SIDE)

--O-O-X-O-O-O
--T---N-M---T
BIG

-O-O-O-X-O-O-O
---W-T-B-N---T

BIG WALL

ETC....right now this is in the "drawing board" phase...

I cant recall if I shared this here yet or not...

we used colors for zone coverage calls last year, had to use hand signals to represent coverages and often tied the color to blitzes (too hard)

and this year we have simplified to a simple system of zones are single digit number calls and man coverage are double digit calls..

sample

zones= 2, 3, 4

man= 10, 11, 12

cover two= 2
cover three= 3
cover four = 4

man = 10 (1 under, 0 over)
man  free= 11 (sos adjustment vs trips)
man under cover 2= 12
could even use cover 13 if we wanted to prevent...

Steve,

I don't disagree that man is better than zone to defend passes.  Zone sucks as a coverage, as it is VERY hard to prevent your DB from letting a receiver run right by him playing zone.  It's hard to get them to understand that yes, you're guarding this piece of grass, but that doesn't mean you ignore the receivers, LOL.

For ME, that's simply less of an issue than the negatives I discussed earlier.  If I was a better coach, then maybe I'd be able to coach some of those negatives away...

I was reading a bit about a coach whos basic philosophy is to play good zone RUN DEFENSE on first down and plan to man up and bring it on third down. His reasons, zone was superior for run defense for him because he needed corners and safety to see the ball....then on pass downs, man was better because he needed his corners and safety ignoring the run and playing pass.  seems simple and relatively obvious and predictable yet hes been successful.

I would agree with him.  For the new coach or DC it is very important to understand that there is more to defense than simp-ly pinning your ears back and go.  It is indeed a situational endeavor.  Risk vs. Reward

For those of you using cover 0 a ton....

do you prefer to spin your spur or gamble a bit that the back out of the backfield in this set wont hurt you?
-------------------------O--O
-----------------------------------------O-------------O
-----O----------O--O--X--O--O------------O
-----------------T-------N------T------------R
----------L------W-----M------S--------------------C
------C---------------------------------F

if the L is "free" because he has no #2 on his side, and the F takes #3  and the MOFO scenario leaves the back in the backfield a chance to swing to the trips side....who do you have taking him?

I know AIR FORCE would spin the spur to the fs spot and play him relative tight to the stack so he can closely guard  the ace back.

we have an SOS call that would put the spur where fred is and leave fred in the MOF covering that ace back...

what do you prefer to do? do you say "we are going to send that spur and the 6 from the stack and youd better hit that back fast or your qb is dead!" and leave it at that?

Had an "aha" moment today.

Decided that the BEST way to defend option in the 353  was to have the spurs take the pitch as always but to use a 1/3 rule to create doubt for the qb.....

* IF THERE IS NO LEAD BLOCKER FOR THE PITCH MAN, THEN GO 1/3 OF THE WAY TO THE PITCH MAN AND SIT/HANG...(SLOW PLAY)

*IF THERE IS A LEAD BLOCKER FOR THE PITCH MAN, FLY TO THE PITCH MAN.

Also, in continuing my exploration of my SWAT adjustment and the development of the FAT CAT call for a nifty goal line front....I thought I share this...
---------------O----O
------------------O---------------------------------O
------O--O--O--X--O--O--O
L-----C----T----N----T-----F-----R
---------------------------------------------------C
-----------W----M------S

IN "FAT CAT"- THE CORNERS AND FS TAKE THE NUMBER ONES AND THE TES.  THE NUMBER 2 WEAKSIDE RECEIVER IS ALWAYS COVERED BY THE WEAK SIDE SPUR.   THE GOAL HERE IS TO KEEP THE THREE BACKERS FROM TAKING ANYTHING OTHER THAN A BACK OUT.  JAM THE TES, KEEP THE BACKERS FREE. NOTICE THE "AT" IN FAT, CAT,  TELLS THE DLINE TO ADJUST THE TACKLES TO 3 TECHS.

Well, theres no getting me away from it, we will be using the 46 and lots of 46 concepts in our 353 Fist. Just too much of a love affair.

We will be a multiple front, multiple stunt defense with cover 3 as a base, some man and man free as well as a quarters cover 4 package.

With the kids I have, I am tailoring my defensive "adjustors" responsibility to the kids who I think can handle it.  I have a player who was my mike for two years, probably will become our sam so I can put a hard tackling youngster at Mike, with few alignment concerns and one gap and no coverage responsibility.

With high school its critical to consider experience/awareness and athletic ability/fundamentals in the whole mix.

Steve

I felt the same way at the youth level. The 46 is just too good to ever fully leave behind.

You WILL be very happy. Good times are just ahead my friend. Im sure of that.   8)

So,  we need to do a better job preparing our spurs for bootlegs, we need to do a better job preparing our fs for option (hes got to tackle the qb).

This should help our defense tremendously with a vigorous focus there.

Now,...today I found the MOTHERLOAD of 33 footage, if you go to youtube and type in MICHIGAN DEFENSE EVERY SNAP you can find a bunch of cutups of the rodriquez coached defense.
