This was the "open division" game, which for CA, means the 2 best teams in the state, 1 from the north, the other from So Cal, each selected to represent there half of the state as the "thought of/assumed and voted/selected" best team.

If you watched the game then you probably noticed a little something wrong right around the LOS, if you didnt happen to catch this game already, I suggest you do? The alleged #1 team in the state, Westlake, was the bigger stronger team, with an equally powerful offense, supposedly equal to the vonted De La Salle scoring machine.

The Westlake team had many kids above 6' and 250lb or more, De La Salle had 1 maybe 2 if? in that range of size? Point being, on paper, Westlake would shouda been the favorite, and were, concidered such coming into game. THEN they met the O line of De La Salle....

De LA Salle, for the second year in a row, EMBARRASSED souther cal "open division" representative. They flat out destroyed Westlake. Out hustled, out worked, out executed, the Westlake d line looked whooped! AND THEY WERE!

My question/ comment (s) is Servite (2010 So Cal representative) and Westlake (2011) both went to the state champ game and both got destroyed/pounded/smashed/ran over/blocked left right and backwards sometimes both and then diced by the Veer attack of De La Salle. Both teams had to have watched films and knew what was coming, right? The coaching staff knew and have seen repeated tapes of this O. Both teams had bigger stronger kids, both teams had more D1 talent (I know Westlake did and servite had a few) than DLS so whats the final diagnosis......
......it has to be a combo of coaching and attitude AND DE LA SALLE has GOT BOTH! To me, IMO, and I am no expert, could very easily be mistaken, but the Westlake coaching staff just got taken to the tool shed/schooled/ flat out ' out coached on all sides of the ball...again if any of you are on that teams staff I am sorry but video doesnt lie, go get em next time! This and you could clearly see they just wanted it more, the high motor/hustle of the DLS team year in year out is the X factor this team brings to every game. Its a a force of will, non better exemplified than the O line they field year in year out. THE DE LA SALLE FIRE OFF THE BALL AND INNER AND ACTUAL DRIVE IS JUST AMAZING.

How the DLS staff gets this out of the kids every year let alone just once in awhile is just beyond imagination...for me this ability IS in my "coaching dreams" You know the dreams you used to have of being the star FB running over thru everyone, as you get older those dreams fade away and become -"how your team that your coaching ran all over the other teams defense and there was nothing the other team could do, you had answers for any and everything they tried, they were all in awe of your coaching superiority, and at the end of game your team lifts you up on their collective shoulders, the crowd is chanting your name the opposing temas coaching staff wants your autograph" BAM then you wake up to your wife telling you to change a poopy diaper "its your turn"

or is this just me????????????????

JUST watched the highlight video of DLS spanking Westlake. I saw/heard something that would probably go unoticed and maybe not all that important. DLS was within a yard or 2 of the goal and in their traditional split back veer formation. QB went under center and said "set-hut" and I saw the O line fire off ball 1st then the D line move. Then I watched it again, simple set-hut.....then I noticed on my 3rd viewing althought the QB said hut after set fast with no stalling between the 2 words, the ball was being hiked and O line was moving on set? not on hut.................oohh the defense went on hut

small thing, gees I dunno, Im probably not smart enough to figure it out, but Im thinking whats the purpose of saying hut after set? if ball is already hiked? Unless its for the sole purpose of getting the O off on set and D will mistakeingly or psychologically wait & go on hut...thusly getting that split second advantage?

My kids false start a lot of the time in every drill we do.  And my drills ALWAYS go on one.

In games, we false start less, but we're off the ball slower, too.

I like DLS's system.

With the DLS system, the O-Line knows not only WHAT count the snap is on, but WHEN it's coming.

You go hard count, and the O-Line knows the former but not the latter.

Either way, the D-Line doesn't know WHEN it's coming because they don't know WHAT count it's on.

I've only seen DLS play live once, and that was against St Thomas Aquinas on ESPN this season.
Although STA shut down their much talked about offense, it was DLS's defense that I was impressed with, those kids can HIT!
STA probably won the scoreboard, but DLS won the BLOODBATH...

I have several DLS videos
I became a bit obcessed with them after watching them blow out a HUGE- MUCH larger Evangel team on TV maybe 8 years ago. DLS had some linemen less than 200 lbs, while Evangel had 3 DTs all from 290--310

From what I know about them is they are a very special program
Bob Ladouceur is all about the O=line
Their entire program he says is at it's center all about his offensive linemen getting their second step down faster than their opp gets his second foot down. He is all about explosiveness and quickness. From the weight room to their speed development and tech drills- it focuses on getting that 2nd step down faster than the opp- according to him.
He claims he is NOT an Xs and Os guy
He does claim to be someone that does the ordinary, extraordinarily well. They are going to be great at base tech and base execution.
He does claim to be a very hard worker and motivator

His kids are all in for each other and their coaches
His teams give what they call "Perfect Effort", on every play
Amazing the consistent and aggressive effort those kids give on every down of every game
It is something we talk about from the first pre season meeting, every practice, every game and at our banquet in our program- Perfect Effort has been our mantra/battle cry since about 2006 or so.
Our first 2 steps on the O-line has what we've built our O-line practices around- We do 2 step drills daily and do things like tennis ball drills and GOD fits with speed being the focus of every O-line practice.

For those that wonder here is part of that video or at least the important part. Sorry no audio. This is the same technique that Tim Murphy teaches in his dvd's.  His time as the HC at Yganacio Valley was spent right behind the De La Salle Spartans and he got a lot of first hand time with Bob Ladouceur.

My 2 points of interest in games like this are
1) De La Salle is willing to play anybody, and they seek out the #1 teams in the country, Don Bosco Ironmen -NJ rated #1 team in coun try played them twice, the #1 team in, I think is was Alabama? then the top teams from Florida, Bellvue from Washington always good etc. THEY ARE FEARLESS!
2) DLS had 3 or less, if any true D1 kids and STA had oh lets say 10, thats always a good assumption. Point being is they compete against these teams over and over and they do it most often with 2, 1 or 0 D1 kids. Maurice Jones Drew is the only stud RB I can recall in recent history.

Trying to say it right, they might not have the most talented players or D1's but they have the very best of the good players that along with coaching and schemes make them one of the best around teams. I think one more round with STA they can beat them they DLS won't have the turnover's taking nothing away from STA!
Hopefully you understand what I'm saying.

DLS uses a rolling start on their snap count.  They go from a 2pt to 3 pt stance and fire out.  We use the same snap count without the change in stance.  For us it is just "Set Go" with no pause. We snap the ball on the T of set.  It doesn't sound like much but our guys are coming off the ball almost before the ball is snapped.

There is a very good book that explains how the program was built and what goes on.

I'm pretty sure DLS has the best players.  They might not be recruited highly, but if you want to win a high school football game, they're your guys.

They don't show up as freshmen like that, though.

They've had their share:

T.J. Ward Safety for the Cleveland Browns
Maurice Jones-Drew Halfback for Jacksonville Jaguars.
Amani Toomer Wide Receiver for New York Giants
Kevin Simon Linebacker for Washington Redskins
Matt Gutierrez Quarterback with Kansas City Chiefs
Jackie Bates Cornerback with the Kansas City Chiefs
D. J. Williams Outside Linebacker with Denver Broncos
Doug Brien Kicker with San Francisco 49ers
David Loverne Guard with New York Jets
Derek Landri Defensive tackle with Philadelphia Eagles
