Is exactly why I would look into deleting the DE and going with Spur and Rover still showing 5-3  ;)

Folks in instances where you cannot run your base defense comfortably, here is a prime example of how one disguises a defense!!

I tend to agree with you. Most of the 5-3 guys I know are very reluctant to get out of the 50 look.  I have seen guys talk about staying in a 5-3 cover 3 no matter the formation. To the point I have seen them win championships.

John, why limit yourself? when we go with the 353 and blitz the sam and will, we are in your cover three...three under, three deep....but we arent THAT PREDICTABLE...I think its better if you can keep em guessing ....which of the middle zone players are going to come?...much more complex from an offensive line and backfield pass protection point of view....again, I still think you can "game" up front in the 53 to give some of the same advantages to your kids as we enjoy from the stack....nuts, tuns, twisters, texas...stunts that arent all that hard to teach and learn.

Steve, I think it comes down to less moving parts.

I agree most youth programs have 2 to 3 practices a week, before the season we have 3 a week after the season starts its twice a week. Less moving parts the less time to teach the parts that you have.

To my mind that is the biggest reason that many of us youth coaches cannot get too sophisticated.  However teaching a Spur and Rover is not all that difficult for the youth level.  In fact I would argue that it's a whole lot easier to find kids that can fit those roles than finding DE's.  DE is a critical position for the 50 front.  Also too it depends a ton on how you play the DE's that makes all the difference in the world in my pea brain!!

LOL ;)

Let me explain why I switched to the 353...

We see the triple option 5 times...

We see the spread about 5 times...

we see multiple I

we see double dive

we see straight tee

So, we are using 53 personnel but teach our "ends" to play as drop ends (spurs, outside backers) and we teach our inside backers to be able to play with a hand down and also drop into short shallow zones.  They have no man coverage responsibility.

If  you want to play 53, talk to bill mountjoy, he had a great 53 playbook.

LOL. Steve, I understand your change and you do coach HS level. I see very little spread and the option has been something like "BIG FOOT" in my parts.

The point is, we can play the 53 vs the spread or anything else or we can "use the 353" vs the spread or anything else..we have 53 personnel because we figure its our best personnel on the field, and we certainly dont want to be run over.

so, if you were asking me "how would you play the 53 vs the spread" - id respond, for your stuation, man up, go cover 0 and rush 6 most of the time, but not all of the time or screens and draws will hurt you.

take your 53,  cover the #1s with the corners, now your fs takes the #2 strong and your best athlete on the weak side, either your will or your weak side defensive end has to take #2 weak.

If you want to go cover 1, then you have to have two adjustors, the better guy strong and the better guy weak...

I dont think theres much mystery to it really.  (sorry if that sounds demeaning, its not meant to be, its just that as you said , its a pick your poison) - if you wanted to KEEP THE STACKS,  then the ends have to become spurs, if you want to keep your ends, then your olber and or your fs have to become spurs...
