How Devious...

Just thinking of all the times ive watched games where too many defenders were on the field and said its a darn shame where pro players cant count to 11. Now I wonder if it was by design?

Most spectators only know what the announcer knows or wants you to know, which is nothing compared to what the coach’s are doing. I can see it being a smart strategy like this one gone wrong.

You couldn't pull that against the Pats.  They love catching Def with too many men on the field.

I got caught more times that I care to count with only 9 or 10 on the field, so this is foreign to me!   ??? ??? ::) ::) ::) :-[

I was given this same "advice" from a fellow coach this year on how most officials do not count defenders when in goal line or extra point situations.

In addition, the same coach provided me with some valuable "clock killing" techniques.  We play with a running clock except for when inside of two minutes.   It was suggested that if you have the ball inside of 4 minutes but outside of 2 minutes, the lead and want to run the clock without running a play...   have your offensive lineman false start.  The game clock continues to run and you are given an additional 60 seconds to call your play in the huddle.  Use as much of the 60 seconds that you can in the huddle and at the line of scrimmage, by the time you run your next play, you should be inside of the two minute warning.   2:00 plus minutes are burned without running a play.

I read this thread last week as it came up in a search I did looking for some info un something totally unrelated. But as it happens often to me, the topic was so interesting I ended up following links and learning new things.
I felt so cool tonight (superbowl) when I was able to tell my son coach Coughlin ran the polish goaline tactic. They ran that clock down to 9 seconds.

I love this forum, I stumble to interesting topics while I search for other unrelated info.... I hope some day I can contribute something to you all.

I immediately thought about this thread, too.  Good stuff.

Do NOT argue this with Coach Huey. 2 pages of debate just went poof.

There are strategies that to some do not make sense, they may not be what some call "clean" football but at the end of the day its all about winning. Would I do it? NO but then again im not being paid 7 figures to win. Imo its all about the end result. Its the same reason teams allow tds on purpose, so they have more time to drive the ball for a win at the end. Put yourself in the position to WIN and as Lombardi said, "Winning isnt everything but its the ONLY thing." A means to an end.

He said they are professionals and do NOT do this on intent. Someone posted the polish goalline tactic and he said it was dumb and the Defense didnt gain anything. We argued that it took time off the clock and limited the offenses chances to score when 5 yards meant nothing. Next thing i know the whole thread is gone.

I guess ol Huey is a Pats fan... it definately struck a nerve.

That might have been a nice time to throw in a Spygate reference. :)

Seems like a good counter argument to me.  I think they did it on purpose.  It was sound strategy for the moment.

5 yard penalty and no clock add on.  I bet we see a rule change next year.
