Mt. Rushmores (lists)
« on: January 28, 2012, 12:54:52 PM »
I like lists.  I think they are fun for the debates they stir.  Tough to get these lists to 4.  Lists are not in order of greatness.

Fun - Keep 'em coming!

College
- Paterno
- Bowden
- Bryant
- Gagliardi

Pro
- Knoll
- Walsh
- Belichick
- Lombardi

QBs
- Montana
- Farve
- Manning (Peyton)
- Unitas

RBs
- Payton
- Sanders
- Brown
- Tomlinson
(Honorable mention would be Martin, Dickerson...)

You did say these are fun because they can start debates, well here's one...  Any list of RBs that doesn't have Walter Payton on them (belebuch's  ;))is discredited by yours truly.  And I purposely have omitted Emmit Otter because of personal reasons (he played for Dallas) and for other reasons, i.e. - had he played for any other team and behind any other line, he was average at best!!!  That Dallas line was the best all-time IMO, and most of Emmit's runs were through HUGE HUGE holes!  OK, I am only half serious but thought I would smack the hornets nest a bit  8)...  Dallas fans have fun ripping me, Payton and Sanders fans help me out...  ;D

Have to Have Walter Payton in the list of Backs.
You won't find a more complete player at that position for a LONG LONG TIME.
I would add Gayle Sayers simply because he was truly amazing to watch run with the football. Again, skills like that cannot be taught.  He had uncanny ability to make defenders look absolutely stupid.

QB's
I cant believe Favre or Marino haven't been been mentioned.  Marino was an absolutely brilliant passer.  Favre, like him or hate him, he was just plain fun to watch.  Block, Tackle, Improvise.  Not to mention we wasn't too bad at playing either.

I had Farve on mine and Belebuch has Marino.  Awesome QBs - both of them.  And Sayers was incredible...  Wish he got to play longer...

I agree about Emmit Smith.  He was very good, but I think a number of backs would have been very good on those teams.

Eric Dickerson weighed heavy on my mind versus Faulk.  I picked Faulk because I was playing fantasy football during his hey day and he put up unreal numbers in the passing game and running game.  Also, everyone talks about how smart he was as a player.

Marino also came very close to making my list.  I think as great as a passer as he was, his complete lack of mobility hurt him.  He was too often 1,2,3 throw the ball away.  He threw the ball away a lot on 3rd downs and stopped drives.   Whereas, Montana, Young, Elway and other greats would scramble for the 7 yards and get the first down a lot.

I never heard of Blaik before, I looked him up and it looks like he was a very good coach.  I don't know if he is top 4 good though.

Bowden I struggled with a little bit.  I think he was a better overall coach than a pure X's and O's guy.

I don't think Brown will make many people's pro coaching list, but I think with his record and innovations (I love innovators) he really deserves it.  He coached in 10 straight Pro Football title games.

Quote
What were Paul Brown's innovations that created the game we know today?

• Brown was the first head coach to give his prospective players intelligence tests.

• Brown was the first to integrate professional football, prior to Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson integrating baseball.

In 1946, Brown put fullback Marion Motley and defensive lineman Bill Willis on his squad, and both have busts in the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

• Brown was the first coach to have his players wear facemasks.

• Brown was the first to have his players undergo classroom instruction on the professional level.

• Brown was also the first professional football head coach to use film study.

• What we now know as the "practice squad" in the NFL was begun by Brown and McBride, who owned a cab company, as the "taxi squad."

Players who did not make the final roster cut, but might be able to fill in in the case of injury, drove cabs for McBride. Generations later, Clevelanders still call the practice squad the "taxi squad."

• And finally, the commonplace radio helmet for quarterbacks was experimented with by Brown in the preseason of 1956.

In the days of vacuum tubes and shortwave, it did not work too well and Brown scrapped it, but nonetheless, the NFL banned it. No sense in giving Brown another advantage.

Brown's final record in Cleveland was 167-53-8, including four AAFC championships and three NFL championships.

There is no way under any circumstances Brett Favruh comes anywhere close to that list.  Not a chance, he was a knucklehead who cost his teams far more big games than he won.  I'm not even sure he's top 10.  I'd add Brees to Kell's list instead of him.  Blech.

Pro Coach is tough - I wanted to say Noll, Lombardi, Walsh and Belichick, but then there's everything that Brown did.

No love for Shula?

Shula or Halas?

If you include Paul Brown, and I agree he was an tech innovator, Otto Graham has to be included.  The man was a stud!!

Favre was a nut,

but he still beongs in the top 10, 2 time superbowl MVP, though he does hold the records for most interceptions, sacks and, fumbles, he also holds quite a few others.

Per Wikipedia "
He made an NFL record 297 consecutive starts (321 including playoffs).

He is the only player to win the AP Most Valuable Player three consecutive times (1995–97).[4] He has led teams to eight division championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009), five NFC Championship Games (1995, 1996, 1997, 2007, 2009), and two Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl XXXI, Super Bowl XXXII), winning one (Super Bowl XXXI).

He holds many NFL records, including most career touchdown passes, most career passing yards, most career pass completions, most career pass attempts, most career interceptions thrown, most consecutive starts by a player, most consecutive starts by a quarterback, most career victories as a starting quarterback, most sacked, and most fumbles.[5][6] He is often referred to by his nickname "The Gunslinger"."

3× Associated Press Most Valuable Player (MVP) (1995, 1996, and 1997; the last shared with Barry Sanders).[88]
 11× Pro Bowl selection.[89]
 6× First- or Second-team All-Pro selection.[90]
 Named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.[91]

Per Wikipedia " Since first being named the starter of the Green Bay Packers before playing the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 27, 1992, Brett Favre had never missed a game spanning over eighteen and one half consecutive seasons.[103] He holds the record for the most consecutive starts by any player in the NFL with 297, and is one of only six quarterbacks to have started over 100 consecutive games in NFL history. He failed to finish a game due to injury on only eight occasions since taking control of the Packers as quarterback."

Nutty as squirrel shit?... Ok, but he deserves his spot

Joan of Arc has a long Wikipedia entry, too.  And she's not in my top 10 QBs, either.
