I think gumby_in_co  is in the same boat I am. My son (10) put the X-Box limit on himself.

I believe alot has to do with parenting and the individual kids personality.  When I grew up my only choice was to go outside and play with my buddies. Kids have other things competing for their attention now-a-days. 2 thousand and 1 tv channels, video games, the internet and its infinite amount of funny, gross, cute, amazing, stupid videos.

Maybe its because I am immature, but I always played with my son inside and outside. We would give my wife fits when that ball got away from us and knocked some picture off the wall or made the venetian blinds fall to the ground. etc etc. (some people just dont know how to have fun) Then he eventually got old enough to invite his buddies over and give me a well desrved rest, but he still wanted to play the same games his dad would play with him.

I have seen some naturally athletic kids not be able to put their hands together to catch a ball. This tells me no one ever played catch with them, because thats all it takes.

We find to many parents today are more then willing to shell out USD$ 100.00 for a pair of sneakers, (back in the 70's Keds were 1.99 and they felt fine ;) provide a cellphone with texting and web access to their 8 yr old, but cant make the effort to spend 30 - 60 minutes playing with their kids over the weekend.

You AINT THAT BUSY ...G@#$%IT.

Then when they sign them up for an organized sport, and their kid has to play on the same team as kids that have been running around in their backyards or riding bikes, kids that can actually run, jump, catch a ball. They findout that their child will have a very hard time, and he does not understand why he can not be a shortstop or be a RB.

Times have changed, most neihborhoods are not like the one I grew up in. Us Mom and Dads need to adapt, and give the correct things priority.

Just my  $0.02

I do a ton of stuff with my kids, which means some video games too.   ;)  There is clearly a difference between kids that have parents that do stuff with them versus ones that do not in all sports (and in music lessons, HW, etc. too).  When I grew up, though, my dad didn't do squat with me, so I guess it may not be a generational thing as much as a priority thing.  A generation before that, the kids worked on the family farm or in the family business.

2) Starbucks?

Yep.  Starbucks.  They have these fruity smoothies that he likes.  Although, it's not like I'd freak out if he was drinking coffee.

There are some good points on this topic, both for and against. I myself am a competitive gamer and have gone so far as to be sponsored by gaming companies. So, you can probably guess which side of the fence I am on when it comes to video games. I personally think the bigger issue is with society as a whole. Technology has made it possible for us to obtain every bit of information about someone, thus causing paranoia and contempt for our neighbors. The fact that now we can, in a few clicks of the mouse, find out just how many perverts there are in our neighborhoods and what they have done to deserve that title; makes  all of us parents take notice. You as a parent have to take an active approach to knowing where your kids are at all times. And it has become a detriment to pick up games, in any sport!

It is true that, like anything else in life, if you do things in excess there are bound to be consequences. Eat a box of Twinkies every day for a year and you are bound to be a fat ass! Everything in moderation!

Just giving you some jazz.  I know many middle school kids who drink coffee drinks regularly.  I don't have a big opinion on it, except if one of my kids ever had coffee, there would assuredly be destruction of something.
