Glazier Speakers
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:05:23 PM »
I want to see a lot more D-Line stuff this year.

I want to see Brendan Daly of the Rams at Chicago II.

At Chicago I, I can see Mike Tuiasosopo (Colorado D-Line), but then I'll miss Barney Cotton (Nebraska O-Line).

At Grand Rapids, I can see Brady Hoke speaking about D-Line, but then I'll miss Jim McNally.

Has anyone see Tuiasosopo, Cotton, or Hoke speak?  Any recommendations?

I saw coach Hoke speak last year.  He spoke on D-line Fundamentals.  He had tons of energy and came across like he appears on television.  I thought it was time well spent.

The best takeaway for me was his focus on the fundamentals even at the Division I level.  He demonstrated a few drills, walking through them step by step with pointers. An example of one of his pointers was to always run defensive drills on movement, not sound.  If he is focused on the basics at the college level, we should be too.

I went to Tuiasosopo instead of Cotton.

I don't know for sure if it was the right decision, because I don't know how good Cotton was, but I learned a ton about D-Line.

Tuiasosopo definitely has a lot of enthusiasm.  He did a 50-minute session and a 125-minute session.

On top of all the D-Line info, I picked up a lot of coaching points, concepts, and drills that will work for O-Line, too.  And he was really cool about staying after to answer questions.  He loves talking D-Line.  He answered all of my questions, which was nice, since I know about as much about D-Line as I do about badminton.  And I got some nice reinforcement concerning how we take on defenders.

I'm definitely glad I went.

Tuiasosopo was pretty good...

Alot of old school, D-line smash mouth stuff that I was taught in High School way back when!

"F@@K! this thing! Excuse my Samoan!" when he kept messin up the dvd player ...Dude was a classic.

I like his teaching concepts and how simple he kept it,  the things I came away with from his D-line run game

1. Stance and BGO( 2 power step boom boom)got the second step down before the Olineman
2. Hands punch( A to B triangle...elbow tight thumbs to 12o clock) Face as a weapon with lockout and run your feet
3. Escape vs the two type of blocks ( Aggressive--- lockout knock it back and no-aggressive...close and bend to first threat)

His drills where good too... hell of a guy!

He taught the explosion / helmet / hands / lockout technique didn't he?  That is what it sounds like.  That is the way I was taught by my buddy when I was in h.s. and he was playing LB at Purdue (the way they taught him).  Using that technique really improved my play in h.s.

The face only hits for a millisecond before your hands explode through.  It's my understanding that the technique is illegal now in light of all the concussion concerns.

I am going to try to make the March - Chicago Glazier.

I attended them also.  In my opinion I though all the speakers that I had the chance to hear were great and if there was anything I could pick up and apply to my players, it was time well spent. I spread my time around focusing on sessions where I knew little about or wanted to improve on.

Below are the sessions I attended.

Thursday
Dan Morrison [QB Development] - Good session, learned what to look for on how to improve a QB's accuracy.
Mike Cassity [Defending Spread Option Football] - I liked him, high energy guy. great personality, great pointers on option containment, had the field well broken down.
Mike Stantion [O-Line Run and Pass Fundamentals] - Took many good o-line drills from this session.

Friday
Ralph Munger [Wing-T counters, criss-cross, jersey tag, T-trap] - Attended this session to see how another coach applied the wing-t. I would say its very hard to cover an offensive scheme in 50 minutes.  I did like what he did with the wing-t.
Phil Elmassian [LB Fundamentals & Checklist] - Very good, a must see in my opinion.  First coach I heard introduce "shimmy" to the ball carrier in a tackle.  I taught that to my boys last year, just never heard it from a coach or read about it until now.
Steve Tustie [TNT - Tackling n Turnover Circuit] - enjoyed his intensity, good drills.

Mike Tuiasosopo [Run Fundamentals] - I enjoyed this session, great pointers.  I heard he got better as he proceeded through his other sessions.
Luke Radke [21 Coaching Points To Improve Kickoffs and Field Goals] - I have little experience or information on coaching kicking.  I did learn a lot about set up, form, kicking styles, the "sweet spot" on foot and ball, balance, etc.  What I took from this session I'm positive will help with our kicking game, especially extra points.
Barney Cotton [O-Line Development and Drills] - Very good, great pointers and drills, foot work heavy, Taught threw film.  I would see him if you have a chance in the future.

Keith O'Fallan [Teaching Safe Tackling Fundamentals] - Did enjoy this, spoke in length about block destruction. big on film.  some great drills to be taken from him.
Keith O'Fallan [Practice Planning] - I attended to see what other coaches do.  He has a pretty interesting grading system he spoke about during this session.

Saturday
John Tumpkin [LB Fundamentals & Drills] - He covered EVERYTHING.  Coach Tumpkin is a must see.  He had the most extensive power point you will see on a LB, If you can get your hands on a copy of it, Get one.  Excellent session.
Jeff Bogdan [Running the Double Wing] - Attended just to hear how the DW worked.
Jeff Bogdan (50 Eagle Defense] - I ran a 5-3 last year.  attend to see how he coached it, compared to me.

Keith O'Fallan [Simple Ways to Teach LB Play]
Keith O'Fallan [Simple Ways to Teach D-Line Play] - I enjoyed both.  Keith runs a block react scheme.  He has some very good techniques, and fundamentals to share.  Picked up on some great shed blocking drills.

Some of the newer things the coaches spoke about which I have never read about:
Tackling: Speed to power.
Tackling: "Shimmy" to ball carrier.
Tackling: Roll Tackling

Word of the Clinic: Eyes, Eyes, Eyes ... The speakers coaches could not emphasize the importance of this enough

Overall I enjoyed every session and I'm looking forward to attending the clinic in march.

I went to these:

Mark Staten, Michigan State O-Line
  2-Back Power
  Wide Zone
  Run & Pass Fundamentals
Lots of neat stuff.  Always cool to see everyone's tricks for zone.

Jim Perkins, Illinois High School Athletic Association
Top 5 Misunderstood Rules in High School Football
I figured it might save me from doing something stupid next year (obviously, I will still have plenty of other stupid things to fall back on).

Steve Tutsie -- Warren Central HS DC
  Tackling 'N' Turnover Circuit
That's one fired up dude.  Great stuff.

Mike Tuiasosopo -- Colorado DL
  Run Fundamentals
Line Movements vs. Run and Pass
  Pass Rush
I got quite the DL education.  He was also very fired up.  I should spend more time with guys on the defensive side of the ball.  They get rolling.  Offense is like science class (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course).

Rob Cushman -- Augustana College HC
  Hit Progression and Block Protection
A bunch of neat ideas.  I want to go watch their spring practice.

Brian Lyons -- Tri-Fitness
Designing an Off-Season Strength Program with Minimal Resources
Just an overview, and a lot of stuff I already knew from my other sport, but I picked up a few good ideas.

Joe Gilbert -- UAB OL/OC
  Inside Zone & Zone Option
  Pass Pro
  Run Drills
Yet more zone.  Lots of little footwork tricks.  Good stuff on getting LBs.  Bought his drill DVDs and have his drill hand-out.

Jerry Campbell -- Clovis West HS
  4-2 and 4-4
Always interesting, and great stuff about teaching, but the defensive scheme stuff just kills me.  The defensive guys always have about 300 things to worry about.

I bought a 224-page notebook, and I think that's actually sheets, not pages, and it still doesn't look like it's going to be enough for two more Glaziers, C.O.O.L., and McNally (I went to the Indy Glazier last week in addition to the Chicago one).  I've been taking a ton of notes.  By the time C.O.O.L. is over, all of my techniques and schemes will be completely taken apart and lying all over the place, and then I'll put them back together in time for summer camp.

Coach Elmassion was at NU when they set all those records for defensive futility. He had the DBs- top 5 recruiting class per Rivals- yet they broke every single record- in the wrong direction on defense, ranked #110. 2 years after he left-NU was ranked #1 or 2 in scoring defense.  He has been at somethng like 17 different schools? None for longer than a few years or 1- then out- fired many times. Goes to show you, it's all about who you know at that level in many ways  ;) Sounds like an interesting theory- make sure there is data behind it that it actually works.
http://www.goredbirds.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/010509aaa.html
One span= 5 years, 5 different gigs- mostly laterals- NU was longest job of his career- 3 years
NU was quite possibly the worst tackling team in DI the year they were fired. May be super nice guy, great speaker, but golly was the defense they coached simply awful during that time frame here, really tough to watch. Best of luck to him though.

As opposed to youth, in which it's about who you know in every way.

You know, I'll have to give that some thought.  I liked his practice plans - nothing revolutionary - he divides his practice up into blocks of time that are absolute.  So if you have a 2 hour practice, you can go 12 ten minute segments - or 10 twelves.  He spends time every week in one of those blocks just working the QB and receivers on passing, for instance.  Again - nothing super "different", just an organizational tactic I hadn't really seen or considered.  That one is something I'll likely try out.

He's a big spread guy, in fact I believe Zach/Big Coconut's spread was heavily influenced or based on it.  Good stuff, I liked his screen game and the traps.

Looking at his 50 slant D, there were a lot of similarities with JJ's 33 and Jack's 63 that I felt pretty good about what we're doing.

On a note related to that - thinking about it, there are very few youth specific defenses out there any more that aren't either man or inverted CB's.  Jack's, JJ's, Clark's KB, and this one, with inverted CB's.  Interesting...

I'll have to give some more thought to it.  I picked up 4 of his DVD's - trap and jet sweep, and screen and flood passing, and a flash drive with all of his clinic presentation material.  Will likely take another look at it on the flights to NO this coming week.
