Training QB's
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:31:21 AM »
I have several kids that are interested in trying QB in HS.  They do not get the opportunity in youth because they are being played at different positions.  Both are two of our team's better players on O and D.

One of the parents has asked me if I can work with them on the footwork and throwing mechanics so they can take a shot at QB in 9th Grade, they are both in 6th Grade.  Both parents said the youth coach told them that the team "needs" them at other positions and they would not be playing QB in 7th Grade.

I have no problem working with them, they are both good baseball players have nice arm strength and mobility.  Actually, they have been part of state champion Little League tournament teams, so they have performed under pressure.  I also believe kids should have the opportunity to chase their dream.

Does anyone have an understandable basic QB mechanics information so that I can make sure I am doing it right.  I don't want to rely on memory from 30 years ago (that's how long its been)!  Thanks

There are many QB snippets on Youtube. Some better than others. Really tough to describe everything in written form.

Rich Kelly posted up some great Walsh videos that you can watch in another thread like this one not too long ago.  Search his posting history or this section and you should find them. I found those to be really good.

....or if the parents are all over this then they can pony up the dough for Slacks Stuff.  ;)

Coach, I have studied Darin Slack, Coverdale, Walsh and have put together a small powerpoint I use to teach a three day throwing clinic every year.

If they are baseball pitchers I carry as much as possible from their baseball throws into their football throws.  This ranges from holding the ball near their ear to stepping forward as they throw.

Getting away from baseball, it's critical how they hold the ball to throw.  Almost no youth coach I've seen knows how the ball is correctly held.  It's not the way people think.

Clark

That gave me a chuckle because the only pitch my son could throw was a knuckleball. He was a VERY good passing QB though.

I have a post on here somewhere with Bill Wals giving complete instruction on QB coaching... Start there, Darrin Slacks stuff is excellent as well
