NC Davidson Clinic Guest Speaker: Hal Mumme
« on: February 22, 2012, 08:08:38 PM »
I was wondering if anyone else would be attending this NC Davidson clinic. I'm pretty excited about Hal Mumme being htere.

I'll be sure to share some of my notes from there on here for those of you who can't make it, as well.

Here's some of the biggest things I took away from hearing Hal Mumme:

1. RUN THE STICK ROUTE AT 3 YARDS! NOT 5!
2. Use a shoot route with stick, not a swing. The shoot route happens quicker, and gives the QB a clearer read.
3. Stick is best against two deep defenses. It becomes a numbers issue, a defense with 2 safeties has a hard time covering the stick combo, and shutting off the slant on the backside.
4. Only use double slants if you have big Wrs. If not, run a fade with X.
5. Always read the by the RB second (on mesh, corner, and stick). He's your best athlete, so get him the football.
5. When you get 1 safety looks, run Y corner instead of stick.
6. When running mesh, try to force the ball to Z.
7. On the mesh, give your QB a signal to tell Z if he wants a post, a corner, or a 10 yard speed out.
8. Have Z and your QB work the three options on mesh for the first ten minutes of each practice. Get good at forcing it.
9. The swing route by the running back is still your second option, even on mesh.
10. Don't over coach the mesh read by the qb, and don't freak out if he hits the wrong man.
11. On mesh, have your Wr's slowly drift deeper against man coverage after they mesh.

Here's what I got from listening to trip Merritt and some of the other defensive guys:

1. Against double wing option sets, don't get bigger on defense, get smaller. The the offense has 3 rbs and 2 wr. You should have plenty of speed on the field as well. They recommended a 5-3 double eagle look except sub your OLBs for Dbs, and make them out to about 7 yards and one yard outside the wing back.

2. Slow play the zone read with your LBs. They run a 3-4 defense and if the ILB see's his guard step out to double team the 4 technique, he will stack over the nose guard and slow play the RB to the QB. This way he can be there for the cutback play.

3. Have your backside ILB step outside for QB on zone read.

4. Using one of your ILBs in a pick game with either the DE or NG works great to create pressure while only sending four rushers. They take the ILB and have him walk up to a 4i look. The DE will be in a 4 technique. On the snap the ILB will engage the offensive tackle and the DE will loop inside to B gap. The ILB will then ricochet inside to B gap as well. If the guard shows the DE his face (is looking at the DE and about to block him), the DE will fight inside to A gap. If he sees the guards butt, he will get upfield.
