Title: sweep til they weep!
Post by: CoachCalande on November 05, 2013, 02:05:53 PM
Huge year for us running sweep.

Most teams this year have decided "we are squeezing down on trap and power"- and off we go around the end!

Steve,

How are you running it?  And I assume it's from DTDW?

We run the John McKay student body right/left sweep that we have been running for years.

Both guards pull check for lbers (if lber is showing blitz, don't pull) playside tackle has #1, playside te has #2 dlineman and wing seals in the force defender. , we kick the corner out with the fullback and run into the alley. with the qb tossing and leading through the alley. looks a lot like a power but a bit wider around the contain player.

bst cuts, bste releases to "pizza block" the safety.  (freshmen are getting pizza this Friday for successful td due to pizza block).

shock and awe sweep?

We do not run that one right now, we run toss sweep and sprint sweep.

we had similar results, albiet from the SW not the DW.

had many long TD runs on sweeps after the D clamped down on power - broke much more than any other play.

helps when you have a burner at 1 back (or 3 in DW)  ;)

our kid became a MUCH harder runner on power as the season went on - he's naturally more of a true dual threat QB than a SW TB type (we didn't have one of those). so while we had to work relentlessly on him lowering his pads and delivering the blow on power, didn't have to coach him much on sweeps.

the culmination was in the last few weeks. earlier when we'd call sweep (instead of power) in certain short yardage / PAT situations w a favorable edge count if there was one kid in his way, he'd try to dance around him. last few weeks we finally got him to just lower the shoulder and run through the kid - converted EVERY situation  8)

granted if we blocked it perfectly he'd never be touched but in the real world, that's not always the case (as much as it kills me) and your best kid should be able to beat one IMO.

Steve,

It seems to be a common theme for a lot of us that as teams learn to squeeze down on our power, counter, and traps we have three options....play action pass, vertical pass behind the coverage, and sweep to the perimeter to force the them to expand horizontally and vertically.

Murph ran into this issue while at Clovis which is why he ran Trojan and a few other sweep variations along with vertical passes off his power and sweep game.

I have as well...power sweep has become a big part of our offense along with power pass and the vertical passing game.  It really forces the defense to soften on the edge and interior and not load the LOS with every defender.

We always seem to get leakage front side. We zoned  or reach playside and and pulled the bsg and bsg.

I ran the shock and awe sweep this season and abandoned the typical toss sweep... My wings had a hard time dealing with the huge DE's that seemed to be on every team so we just decided to pull everyone other than the PSTE, PSW, BST, and CENTER (who cut playside if no NT)

We'd have a TON of blockers around the corner. I had youth coaches coming up to me like HOLY CRAP HOW MANY KIDS PULL and THAT'LL NEVER WORK.... hardest part was getting kids to engage instead of just running with the runner as escorts.....
