Need help with adjustments vs VERY fast back...
« on: August 26, 2013, 05:12:07 PM »
Hey coach had my first jamboree yesterday with the 46 guts....Offensively nobody stopped us. We drove down the field on both teams even though we seemed undersized on the line.  I got called 3 times for a HIGH LOW bc the first team I played I didn't realize that they were running a 4-4 with 2 techs.... That was it other than the D ends. My TE's assumed still cut that guy but the Center was already blocking back. It also happened worse during Ugly/Angry... My bad that I didn't coach that up. We don't see alot of 2 techs in the 4-4. Usually 3's or 4's to stop the offtackle play.I'm going to install a line call today if my guards see 2 techs to call off the cut and the TE will go second level and wall off.... We ran power, counter, counter trap, xx counter, a few passes, and ran some fire/flame, angry/ugly all to pretty good effect. their DE's were squeezing the C-gap hard and just standing there in the hole so I had to tell my FB to go find him if he does that..... Overall though offensively everyone commented that we looked crisp..

Okay fast forward to the defense. They gave us two sessions back to back on defense. Wasn't really fair to us but that's how it goes. Two 15 minute running clocks.... So needless to say they were gassed. The first team was a Wishbone team. we saw a TON of double tight and occasionally 1 split reciever.  They have one amazing running back with great speed.  NOBODY all day was able to run up the middle on us. I ran a little mike gambler, a little gambler stack.... Occasionally went to Victory..... Nothing serious though. I was concentrating on alignment and guys on the right guys.

Well all the TD's they got came on missed tackles by my DE's... Sometimes they were in the backfield but if ONE kid missed this back it was over... I still have to look at the tape to see where the breakdown was but against double tight my coaches are saying with primary RUN teams that love to sweep that one kid out there is simply not enough.... We are considering against double tight having a COWBOY call (Corners OUT) where against full backfields Sam and Will will stay at LB depth but will key the TE's for RUN/PASS read.  The CB's will align 3-4 yds outside the Defensive Ends and will key near back and cover the flats...... I only intend to do this against heavy run teams. I know the hit squad is coming but I seriously don't have a kid on my team fast enough to stay with this RB step for step even with a good angle. So I'm thinking putting a CB in a little bit of a zone out there might discourage teams from trying to outflank us. If they do an extra body for outside arm free might give my LB's time to fill???? Almost like a type of SKY coverage.... If a near back runs a swing route he'll run right into the CB on that side cause they will take that key responsibility away from the backer..... is this sound????

So what can I do to shore up the outside a little better if I do bring down my corners to cover TE's????? Put them on an outside shade instead of an inside shade????

If I do that at the very least they would be able to get outside and help on the wide sweep.... They are running multiple backs at my DE and even when he maintained outside leverage the two lead backs were getting him wide enough that they could peel off and start blocking my LB's.....

I Have to check the film to see if my LB's were filling fast enough...... At this point i'm going off what I think I saw but I don't know how accurate it is. Film will tell the tale...

moving your corners outside shade again bastardizes the defense, its not the 46.

Get your des to do their job and turn the ball back inside, they dont have to make the tackle, where are your lbers and falcon?

if the des contain the ball, the falcon fills the alley and the lbers flow with their keys sweep isnt an issue.  missed tackles and not doing the job sounds like the issue.

instead of looking for an xs and os cure, coach up the kids in terms of discipline and fundamentals.

Seriously, the whole point to putting the ends on air in the 46 is to contain stuff , crush the qb.

I think that was one problem. My DE was taking a severe angle to the ball. Hes very fast. They were running toss sweep to his side out of double tight wishbone. So two blockers kicking him out side. I gotta find out from film what Mike and sam were doing.

Well you were definitely right Coach. I watched the film and there's numerous issues. We're going to need to coach them up on discipline and keys to look for (we faced a wing t team this past weekend).... I told my Raptor that a wingback opposite his side is a usual key that a counter is coming to his side if his near back flows away.....

So can't understand why he took damn near a Razor angle toward the QB who handed off to that wing on a buck sweep without pullers and ran right by my defensive end. He would have been throttled in the backfield for an 8 yd loss....

So in addition to the bermuda triangle and the diamond drill we're going to start doing the machine gun drill as well...... what sucks is that I have parents who are now supposedly complaining because they think their kids (who are backups) are nothing but tackling dummies and shield holders for the starters....

My team is small at only 20 kids after this latest injury so I don't know what they expect....
