Every team you have is a bit different and so is the opposition- it's a somewhat different equation each week

Against our big rival last season we stopped their opening drive on our 3 yard line.  I tell the OC the play and he reads it off his chart which corresponds to the QB wrist band.  Offense is on our own 10 on the opposite hash, so about 15y down the field and 35y across.

We break the huddle and come out in a trips right formation (we are split back veer so this is just a change up to get LB's out of the box).  The OC wants to call time but I figure we just got the formation wrong and we are still running inside veer so what the heck, let's roll with it instead of burning a timeout.

We snap it and toss it to the back moving towards the trips in our own end zone - uh oh - he executes a perfect reverse handoff to the back who moved out in the trips formation back toward the wide side of the field - about the 3 yard line.  QB gets a block on the OLB and we hit it for about 30y and some breathing room.

The Head Coach told me after the game that they had to pretty much ignore tendencies and realize that our entire playbook was open from anywhere on the field.  I finally told him we ran the wrong play, so I'm not the devious genius he thought.  :)

If you go to the 1:20 mark of this film it shows the play described above.  For some reason I thought we were inside our own 5.  Never let facts get in the way of a good story :)

last year we ran SW.  we scouted our arch rivals, and saw that they were running a 4-4 defense with their Ts in the B gap.  so I shifted the wing formation, putting our QB(blocking back) behind the week side G.  our guards kicked out their Ts, our center and fb doubled their play side ILB, our QB blocked the off side ILB.  we called the formation 'Tank'.  it was a total gimmick, I figured they would figure it out(we only ran blast out of it), and as soon as they adjusted, we'd shift back into wing and hit the outside.

only they didn't.  we just kept running 'Tank right blast'  our kids were laughing in the huddle(in our league, I can be in the huddle)  'again coach?' they'd ask.  'until they stop it' i'd say back.

the opposing coaches were screaming, 'how can they be running up the middle, we have two linebackers!'  but of course, we had 3 blockers and our RB.  we ended up giving them a pretty good thrashing, which was nice.  two years prior, that same coach blew out the team I was an assistant coach on by a score of 55-6.  he was still running his best players on the last plays of the game.

Dream Big.  Work Hard. Stay Humble.

Always Power. Always. I will run Power until it get's stuffed, which usually means they are selling out to stop it than a complimentary play is open (Wedge, Reverse, ect.). The only exception is if we run it 5 or 6 times for 5-10 yards each time, I might run wedge to give my QB a rest (in SW). When I do that, the Wedge usually goes the rest of the way to score.
