heading to the playoffs
« on: October 22, 2014, 04:08:43 PM »
thought id post whats working well and somethings not so much

working well
- We're 6-1 and undefeated in conf play.  Kids love the run and shoot and we run it all but times we want to power the ball
-  overall completing 60% of our passes.  wanted to be at 65% but for the most part cant complain
- TE screen has been our best play by a long shot.  We've scored 5 times and gotten huge yardage on it
- averaging about 200 yards passing per game for a bunch of 6th graders so that is pretty good

What we need to improve on
- lots of sacks.  our qb's hold the ball too long even though there's running holes for them.  We've instructed them they have 3 seconds and even count it out in practice but still come game time they hold the ball
- uncoordinated signals - this was a topic before but we continually work hard to get our receivers to have a coordinated set of signals.  we've seen too often where one guy is running a slant and one a come back and they virtually run into each other.  even though the coverage may dictate it, I also insist we have one short option on each side in case the qb needs the outlet (may stem from the fact that the qb's are reluctant to run even though very athletic)
- going deep syndrome - left to their own devices, each kid would run deep every play even with the coverage indicators we've told them.  Constantly have to reaffirm what the coverage is and what route that dictates

overall though things have gone well.  Now prepare for the championship game.  Should be interesting as the last time we played this team we won 12-0 and scored on two TE screens.  They brought 5 every play and often blitzed a sixth.  Lots of quick hitters and called qb runs in the works

Ok

quick championship game summary with some unbelievable twists

so play in NJ where the wind was whipping and made our passing game very limited.  long story short, we're down 7-0 early.  other team very physical and we're on our heels a bit.  no more blood in 1h.  challenge the boys at halftime and man did they get fired up.  still nothing in 3q, then got a 50 yard run down to the 3 and punch it in.  crazy extra point play that ended up on SC top ten ties the score at 7.  we are driving and just playing smash mouth but fumble, next play we intercept and have the ball on their 30 with 30 seconds to go.

WE then run a play that we devised off of the spread that was wide open twice.  we call it tackle eligible and goes like this.  Normal spread deployment but the two receivers on the weak side are on the LOS.  inside guy at that point is a lineman and cannot go out for a pass.  the three guys on the wide side are all off the line.  That makes the tackle on the strong side eligible.  We simply released him on a post which was wide open, ran the ball to the 2 and we punched it in next play for the win.  awesome stuff.  as one of my coaches said, this is why we coach

for any interested, fire questions if any on the tackle eligible.  great play and will only be picked up if the other team is really really paying attention
