Sorry guys.  Life got a little crazy as of late.

Changed companies and had a lot of other things going on with the family and work for the last few months.

I will go through all of the post and answer them as I get time.

I was going to say that I had not seen Jack around much lately.  Glad things are settling down a bit.

How did your season go?

Poorly in the win/loss category.  Well in the development part especially near the end of the season.

We won 2 games out of 8 and a few were not even close.  Lots of issues...but I think I got most of them resolved by season's end.  The combining two teams really set us back a lot more than I thought it would have...never had to go through that and it was a stumbling block...  The assistant coaches were outstanding and our coaching staff is pretty much set..I need to resolve one coaching issue (from the combining) but I think it will work.  I knew at the beginning it might be a problem and at one point I thought it was not going to be and it surfaced into an issue.

Biggest problem was mental toughness...we play in a really good division...  Lots of great talent and solid coaching so there is not a lot of room for mistakes.

We started with 20 kids on the roster and finished with 19.  One dropped because his heart was not in it...good athlete and over time he would have developed into a good player but he was a soccer player that needs to be playing soccer.

I have six kids that really just play all out no matter the score and give you everything they have.  The five kids that should be impact players and competing at a high level but simply don't have the mental or emotional toughness to play an entire game with all out effort is what really killed us and we need them in games.  The rest are absolute works in progress from a physical, emotional, and mental stand point.  From an athletic perspective we are probably in the top 3 but in the mental/emotional we are in the bottom 2.  Not something we could have fixed in the first season and it was pretty obvious in the first two games.

We had a Post Season Coaches meeting where I let all the coaches discuss positives and negatives...all out on the table and I think we are on the right track.  I have a few other things that I need to get resolved with the team but I think our next season will be a lot better.

My son did really well.  Played center and defensive end...was not great at defensive end but was darn near flawless at center.  One of our big problems on defense was poor play at defensive end and corner which with the 63 just killed us.  We moved some kids around at DE and near the end of the year we found some kids that could play it well enough to give the defense a chance to make plays.  My son ended up playing the last three games at DE and ended up playing both ways so I am  really proud of him.  He wants to work in the offseason on linebacker and defensive end and prior to the season he really just wanted to play center.  Now he wants to try his hand at a lot of different spots so that was a big plus for me as a dad.

Welcome back my friend, I always look for your posts. I know this time of year we all tend to be way to busy.

Jack,
I feel your pain about the combining of teams. We did the same this season and it was an issue. Many of our kids were also mentally weak and you are correct, it is more than a one year process. We saw great improvements overall and have a solid base to work with next season. I don't ever remember struggling so much to get a group of kids to buy into how we do things.

That was a real problem for us...not sure we could have done anything better from that perspective it was just how things worked out at the beginning of the year.  Glad we don't have to go through it again...   I had a really hard time with the mental/emotional toughness with a bunch of the boys...it might have just been a maturity thing with this group of boys (specific boys not all of them)...  I know we had a few the lights turned on mid season and we saw some immediate improvement.  I am hoping that is what happens this coming season. The good things is all of our starting olinemen are playing backetball this season on the same team and the coach runs a motion offense so a few of the boys that need work on lateral movement and footwork are getting a good does of practice :)
