Aren't you actually just running man at that point?

No I am actually running a double team at the point.  I am getting as many double teams to the play side as possible...  I worked on this last year and we simply didn't come off combos we worked on the DRIVE.  Worked great for us and we just focused on driving those DL's into the laps of the LB's.  The uncovered steps play side and meshes with the covered OL and drives.  Now if a LB fills into a space the uncovered OL will see him as covered....  If the LB sits or there is no LB in his space he combos and goes...so it is not simply on.  It just sets the rule that if you are covered he is your man you drive him to the end zone.  Nothing new just how I want my kids to think.

In my Zone scheme we don't worry about covered or uncovered. We do for some protections though, covered to us is anytime a DL is within the OL's frame. Remember we are using 30" splits so it becomes very clear.

So I would really like your opinion on this.  Concerning covered and playside; would you simply go with anyone in your frame is covered and if you have two defenders the defender playside is your covered target?  I plan on using 6" to 12" splits initially with the line but I am going to expand if it looks good. I want to make sure I have this down so that when we start to teach IZ and OZ it is clear for the kids.

The big reason I am doing this is we have a bunch of athletic linemen and a bunch of basket player (point guards) at QB/RB/WR...so the offense is really clicking for us at the moment.  Much more than the double wing was for us last year.

Thanks Joe!

A longtime glazier speaker (I think his name is Barry).   He used to coach the Lions O line.  He says he uses the 90 degree rule.    Make a right angle with your arms.  Anyone within that right angle is covering you.

The tighter your splits the more confusing it is who to block in zone.   You can always start out with wide splits in a two point and if you want to combo tighten back in towards your combo once its clear.

We are running a IZ/OZ read offense with fast screens and such....  We are going covered/uncovered as our read as I like covered/uncovered concepts as they are super simple once you get the rule defined.

Not sure I agree with that.. I have found it is easier when you use zero splits as you can only put so many defenders in the space...so one of the things I am experimenting with (Again) is going zero and seeing how the holes open and then expanding out to 6" across the board testing leakage and covered/uncovered rules if it holds we will expand out again.  I have tested our this a many times over and over and every time expand problems arise so I am not a fan of big splits...so I will never expand into wide splits...just not my thing.

OZ for us is about the track everything looks to become a take over block. IZ is really where we get our combo's, even though we are combo'ing we still Zone step. We teach our guys OZ is horizontal & IZ is vertical. Meaning on OZ we want to get a horizontal push with a body on a body, &  IZ we need a vertical push.

We just went over in video that the perfect combo in IZ pushes the DL back into the LB. I will see if I can pull a screen shot.
