I see a lot of positives with this scheme.  Namely, with how it can be practiced.  Using routes on air, you can have 5 qbs throwing to five receivers every snap, along with five centers if you want.  All five wrs catch a ball and score.  The next five receivers step up and do the same.  Qbs rotate after every throw until they've thrown all five routes of each play. 
In the meantime, o line is repping pass pro.  No backs or tightends, so they rep empty protection scheme religiously along with tons of one on one pass pro.  The receivers are never pass blocking like a tight end or rb, so they get more reps running routes and catching balls.
Forget the windsprints, repping this offense can replace conditioning.

Good questions. 

Its a VERY complicated system to play call but STOOOPID simple for the kids to execute If you can find 3 kids that can run their Routes well and a couple that catch well.

Route running is the be all end all for me personally. You can beat anyone running great Routes. Look at the second and third clips again and watch the TE running a Squirrel Route. Hilarious! I would tease him in practice because he would DESTROY running drags or posts or corners or arrows but the Squirrel? ...well the kid just cant dance yet. So I'd tell em Im going to call plays that tag him as the Squirrel so us coaches would be entertained during the games but when we called his money plays he'd better be....money. And he was. 

His nickname...given to him by his Team Mates....yep..... Squirrel.

So my initial formula is to put the worst route runners on the perimeter to occupy the best cover guys....the CB's. Then place the best route runners vs the less talent cover guys....the OLB's. It takes a lot of talent on one team to find 5 kids that can all run excellent routs and then consistently catch footballs. So some of the receivers are there simply to run interference for others. If a defender picks up on this and stops covering one of these lessor players....we throw a fade to him. Even if he drops it.... its no big deal because now the opposing DC is yelling at that Defender.

Cover 0 means overload too me. I'd much ranter see two deep Safeties and two medium CB's. If we are playing a really well coached Cover 0 Team we might not run any 5 wide.

That is where the play calling comes into the equation. No way I can think fast enough to play call vs the more Dynamic defenses. Learned that at the semi pro levels. So we use a cheat sheet with the plays diagrammed for very quick referencing. The base all fit on a legal size piece of paper front and back. Attached is an example of the base. The base is predicated off whatever receiver tree you design.  I pick routes that never stop and have no double moves so everything is continuous motions less the bubble route. 

Another trick I learned while running the A-11 one season....use two play callers standing side by side. One calls the play and the other tags the primary off that play call. This really helps at the youth levels since there are no eyes in the sky.  The play caller has his nose in his cheat sheet all the time looking for the best play call designs to attack a specific coverage while the tag coach has been watching nothing but Defenders and how well they cover....so he decides who the QB will be attacking and suggest certain routes to a particular player.

So...does it work vs every front....no....do we throw pick 6's...yes....do we take sacks....sure. What I do know is that every Team we run it against does struggle in one way or another because they just don't see it very often. It forces DC's to have a little bit of pee running down his leg if nothing else.

I'll never forget the first time I saw it....Denver vs Chicago maybe 1995....Shanahan's first Season as the Header whenever that was. Denver had first and goal on the 9 and breaks the huddle in Empty Gun for the first time. Chicago calls a time out. Denver does it again and throws an incomplete pass....barely.  Chicago calls time out again. Denver does it again and Elway's walks untouched into the end zone. So began the Empty Era for Denver.

Got an email the other day asking about overloads and mega splits in Empty.

The beauty of check with me is you can "check check" and call the right play really fast but now with mega splits you can now teach teach to OL to ignore the edge defender(s) and step on their buddies creating a wall. Need a cool customer at QB and a play caller that is going to tag to the void with a hot route quickly... so the unblocked edge defender has no chance . 

Do this once and your overloads should disappear for a good while.

Again...TEMPO is the key!
