The kid that had the hit that you were so concerned about didn't participate in the Monday thru Wednesday practices so I'm not sure what that has to do with the overall complaint.

We hit everyday at practice. Blocking drills consist of hitting. We don't always take guys to the ground but we are having contact sessions every practice.

Yeah, not really sure why you think Pop Warner doesn't hit. Potter was a PW guy and the hardest team I have seen in person was Jensen Beach back in 2013 and 2011. Those guys had some physical teams. The PW rules discourage idiots from being idiots but in no way ever limited the amount of hitting we did in practice. Much of the hitting that goes on at the older levels is counter productive imho.

There's new national rules on how much hitting can be done.

http://www.popwarner.com/safety/practice_contact.htm

Quote
The amount of contact at each practice will be reduced to a maximum of 1/3 of practice time (either 40 minutes total of each practice or 1/3 of total weekly practice time). In this context, “contact” means any drill or scrimmage in which drills; down line vs. down line full-speed drills; and scrimmages.
If you show up for a fair fight, you are unprepared.

I understand the new rules(not that new really - I think they are a couple of years old now 2013 I think) but they still do not stop us from being physical. When drills are done effectively you don't need to hit all practice. Everything about a successful football practice is how much you accomplish in a small window of time. When I run my group I can triple the reps of just about every coach, to include high school, that I have seen. And I don't slack on quality. So someone can hit for 15 minutes in a contact drill and I can hit for 5 minutes in the same drill and I get just as much done and throw in conditioning in with it. Also, the high pace more closely resembles what the kids will see in a game. 40 minutes of contact is a bunch imo. Take out warm up, indies(indies don't really involve contact for the most part for me, contact drills are worked in group), any install, scout/game planning and that doesn't leave a whole bunch more than 40 minutes.

Unfortunately Pop Warner is riding the football fear bandwagon and are only making these rules to appease soccer moms. Bad line of thinking imo.

Why would anyone practice on Monday and Tuesday if their games were on Saturday?

When I coached youth ball, we practiced on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for a Saturday game.

That should be printed on a t-shirt and handed out to all youth coaches

The thing is, everybody thinks they are efficient but few are. Every coach would nod in agreement without realizing the statement probably applies to them.

That can go on the back of the T-shirt.

I totally learned that this year. The guy that I hated sat through the whole speech about how to run drills. He liked what I had to say, and then I watched him do it wrong. So I told him how he could improve, and that was apparently the most passive aggressive insult that I could have ever given him.

Also, I listened to a Tony Robin's interview of Coach Wooden recently, and John said, "in order to be a truly effective coach, you need to give people advice with their best interests in mind."

Messes with me a little because I'm not sure if I had this guy's best interest in mind. I was deeply annoyed by him before practice even started...

That's not true.  Often I've thought, wow, did we waste time today!  Even if I were in complete charge I'm sure I'd think that sometimes.  And then make plans to fix that next time, which would lead to other ways to waste time!

Let me say almost all then. But you are correct, there is almost always more ways to be more efficient. You just can't sacrifice quality.

Frankly I think practice planning may be my biggest weakness.  I do okay in August because I've had all kinds of great templates from on here, but during the season I do a horrible job.

Speaking of which - anyone have a nice practice template for about 1:45 long practices at the end of a season? That would work with 16-18 kids who are 11 years old?   :)

Frankly, I should have asked weeks ago.

We practice TUE, THUR, FRI. Full contact maybe 15 minutes per practice. Everything else is on bags or air.

I might up the contact a bit w/ a weaker team. But I've kind of realized that if if have an experienced strong team already, banging them against each other doesn't do much good. Come Saturdays they're hungry to hit & not beat up.

I've done a 180 on contact. Growing up we beat the crap put of each other for 2 hours. So that's how I started coaching. But I've since realized that more contact doesn't necessarily make your team tougher. In fact, sometimes it can make the weaker or scared.

Some guys are really good at teaching toughness & meanness. I'm just not. I was a killer when I played, but I don't know how to teach that. It's just not me. I feel like I excell at teaching, scheme, & fundy's. So that's where I devote my time. I believe in myself in those areas, so the kids believe in me. I cant pretend to be DP & expect buy in from the kids.
It's all about having fun.  But losing aint fun!

We are never as efficient with our time as I would like to be. I'd like to think we move fast but compared to other coaches on here I'm sure we don't move as fast as I think.

As far as practice plans.....by now it should be second nature. The first 2-3 weeks for me is the hardest. Our practices don't change. Same routine, maybe different drills, every day.

We practice 3 days a week and go Offense/Defense/Offense up until early October when it starts getting dark early then we split the last day offense/defense with more group work where the other days are mostly INDY's.

5 min warmup
10 min fit and fight (still in warm up lines)
15 mins tackling (on offensive days only)
15 mins special teams
10 mins walk through the O or D we will face for alignment purposes (this is slow and all mental and not done day 3)
35-40 mins INDY's
10-15 Min TEAM

That's what we do all in season. Doesn't change.

That's something I've noticed about many football coaches, in general.  For one, they think they know how to coach football simply because they are a guy.  And to intimate that they don't know what they are doing, or that they could do better is akin to their gf/so/wife saying that they didn't measure up in the bedroom.  They take it personally.  They'll offer up a ton of excuses and then be ready to fight.
