This might sound crazy, but my justification is that the most dangerous part of practice (especially the first couple HOT August weeks) is heat and helmets make that worse.  Never understood the helmets and shorts thing.  Helmets are for protection and they are doing the opposite during the acclimation days.  We were strictly shorts and tshirt the first day.  Second day, we wore shoulder pads and NO HELMETS.  Even ran Angle Form Tackling like this.  Talk about kids keeping their heads out of the way...

Also work on hitting sleds and this works better when wearing shoulder pads and no helmets.  The form was much better than the first day we actually wore helmets.  Thinking about removing helmets for these drill all season long now.

I go helmets only for a bit before full pads to get new kids used to wearing a helmet and to make sure they are fitted properly. I don't want to deal with issues down the line. I have no problem dealing with the heat as we are in the Northeast and we manage it even in full pads.

I have no problem dealing with the heat as we are in the Northeast and we manage it even in full pads.

I've had practices where kids are covered in mud on dry days from sweat mixing with dry dirt...no joke.  I'm always stressing hydration even up here...as little as 2% dehydration impacts performance.
If you show up for a fair fight, you are unprepared.

Agreed. We have a high humidity issue, but our big problem is that kids are not used to the same heat as in CA or down South. I bring extra water and squirt guns for days when it is mid 80's. If it is in the 90's, I have coolers with ice towels for the back of their necks to get a quick relief.

Not needed in many places, but I have had kids with heat stroke without it because we are sissies in the NE.

Might not have been heat stroke, but they took him away in an ambulance. Probably just dehydration. Ever since that time, we have been over communicating with parents about the need for kids to hydrate during the day.

Was working with a team in Florida a few years back
Parent was talking with me about how many times their child got heat stroke last year due to football
I corrected him because I'm sure he told lots of people who actually thought his son had heat stroke due to football in real life
When in reality he did not

It drives me nuts now to hear someone say, "You have to drink before you're thirsty."

Meanwhile Im trying to drink a bunch of water all day and going to the can every 30 minutes
My body is expelling water- but Im somehow dehydrated? Not so much
