We started with play runners - always humorous when the play you "thought" you sent in didn't resemble what was actually run on the field.
We had play runners this year.  After a few games, I had the playrunner repeat the play to me cause we had a few issues of the wrong play being run which really helped.  Forget where I read this recommendation but it works.

Speaking of different plays being run - off topic, but screw it - when I was in HS, the team my Sr. year was bad.  First year HC, was a long time coach/teacher at school, but pretty clueless as a football coach.  Our QB was going through a really ugly parent divorce situation and was in full f*ck it all mode.  Play came in, he'd come into the huddle and say "should we run this or something else".  Someone would suggest a play, we'd run it.  Drove down the field, eventually turned the ball over on downs.  Came off the field and the HC is yelling at the QB that the 4th down play wasn't what he called.  QB looks at him, laughs and says none of the plays the whole drive were what you called, and walked away.  HC looked at me, and I'm like yup, we changed them in the huddle.

Good guy, but what a bad coach.  He had no idea that we didn't run a single play he'd called.

A little late, and not everything works, but...a good explanation and can get you going for wristbands using individual assignments/scripts/etc.

Ours were easy and only one kid had a wrist coach.

3 colors  White Green Red.  Kind of like a Chinese Menu.   Color-Play Number.  Didn't have to worry about 11 kids staring at their wrists.
Not MPP... ONE TASK!  Teach them!  :)
